TP Link Tapo mini smart plugs are a compact way to add energy monitoring, scheduling, and Alexa control to lamps, holiday lights, outdoor lights, heaters, and other 15 amp, 1800 watt devices. The schedules can keep running even if the home network or Alexa is down, and the plugs also work with the Tapo app and newer Sense energy monitoring support. The night light can be disabled or dimmed, and the small size fits tight spots behind furniture. The main caveat is that all outlets are front facing, so they do not solve side outlet clearance needs, and Matter support is not included.

Thanks - just picked up some more. I have a mix of Tapo and Meross energy monitoring smart plugs but I specifically use the Meross for space heaters because they have a overheat function that automatic powers off if the device gets too hot. Tapo is great for literally everything else tho as long as you stay within the 15A/1800W rating.

These practically replace those timer power plugs with the rotating dial that you push/pull tabs for on/off.

My use case around the house - voice activated or scheduled:
  1. Lamps (multiple around the house)
  2. Holiday lights
  3. Hallway llights
  4. Bathroom heaters
To use 'voice activated' feature, do I need to buy other equipment? for example, mic? will it work thru a smartphone?

I use google home to manage my stuff. I believe Alexa can also manage them via voice. While my phone does work to perform voice commands, I have a bunch of google speakers around the house which primarily control them via voice.

No. Kasa items can be used in the Tapo app using the same account. But Tapo items don't show up in the Kasa app.

I have both apps on my phone.
If Kasa shows up in Tapo, why not just use the Tapo app exclusively?

Also, am I right in understanding that Tapo requires internet to operate on schedule, while Kasa does not? Or is that just in regards to initial setup?

I only have Kasa plugs and no Tapo products...I need a couple more plugs. Trying to decide if I should get the 4-pack of Kasa for $24 or Tapo for $23. They're both eligible for the 25% cash back, so they're effectively the same price. Tapo plugs look they might be smaller, and that's really the only reason I'm considering them. I guess they're the "newer" line of TP-Link plugs, though unless you're going with Matter-enabled units (which neither of these are), I don't think that matters.

Sorry to reply so late. Your Kasa devices will show up in the Tapo app, but from what I can tell you can't add a new Kasa device in Tapo app. When I click on the setup device option, it only shows Tapo models. So I have to add the device to the Kasa app and then it automatically shows up in the Tapo app.

I don't know the answer to the question about the internet. There is a r/TPLinkKasa sub and a r/Tapo/ (monitored by TPLink) on Reddit. They would be more knowledgeable.
