That said, I'm not sure why I should dislike DLCs, except maybe as a matter of resources—because the effort spent on them could have been spent on their next title, reducing lead times between games, and making the studio more sustainable in the long-term, or something along those lines. Could also be resource-intensive if the DLC is free, but doesn't end up selling more units of the base game—could be risky.
Thing is that's all sort of speculative, and making DLCs (paid and otherwise, but the larger ones tend to be paid) seems like a widespread practice, so if it *were* more sustainable not to, well, not that many large studios have made that choice.
Otherwise, I'm not sure why new innovations are better introduced in a new game, rather than refined and built-upon in an older title, or that new gameplay mechanics are the generally the impetus to create DLC to begin with
