I use and/or have used both apps. Both have their quirks. People buy Sonos to have whole home audio. Sonos makes it pretty simple. I have Sonos throughout my house. And very happy with them both. And some S1 and S2 compatible some only compatible with either app.
Easiest way to get whole home audio (for music only) is to buy speakers that are Airplay compatible and have a Home Theater receiver that is Airplay capable. Then you can connect every or some of the speakers via airplay and use your music app of choice.
I recycled several S1 compatible only Play 5's 1st gen's via Airplay. I have 4 stereo pairs. I connected 3 of the pairs each to an AirPort Express 2nd gen via Aux. Enabled Aux in the S1 app and grouped the 4th to one of the 3 through the S1 app (to Airplay to that pair)
All of my Play 5's and Airports bought through FleaBay dirt cheap.
A Caveat… I was able to hardwire all my Play 5's via Ethernet. For SEAMLESS audio, this is a MUST for the Play 5's. They don't have enough Ram and some buffer constantly…
I have bought 2 Sub Minis, a Ray, 6 Play: Ones... all refurbished... all through Sonos eBay (except a couple and bought them refurbished directly from Sonos site).All came virtually brand new. Not a scratch. All worked perfectly out of the box. You would never know they were refurbished other than they said so.
