I assume this version is a remaster of the original, and not the 2.0 version?

Is that a good thing. What is the difference between remastered original vs 2.0?

This is an iconic anime that helped define the genre. Perhaps second only to Akira. Ghost in the Shell (2017) is a live action IP cash-in that not even Scarlett Johansson could save.

2.0 IS the remastered version of this film.

The 2017 film isn't 2.0.

Still, it held it's quality better than most. Even Arise and The New Movie were not entirely terrible. It is only with the 2017 Hollywood movie and SAC_2045, it became obvious that it is over. Akira, like Evangelion, may be a bit of a case of style over substance, oh, but what style. I would place the golden age of anime, when it was heavily influenced by classic cinema (mostly French) rather than comic books and card collecting games (like it is now), between Akira and Jin-Roh, so roughly '88-99, give or take a few pioneers and stragglers.

By the way, Johansson is OK to look at, but not much of an actress, though I guess many would not share this view. I call her the female Keanu, and the fact that she is the go to girl for SciFi, does not bode well for the genre. Her and Charlize Theron, very much the poor man's Sigourney Weaver.

Yeah I see these GitS deals posted all the time, but I think it depends on if you are the right type of viewer. I came into this expecting a more in-depth story and exploration of the world. What I got was a commentary on Artificial Intelligence and a very limited story with mostly the art carrying some of the less interesting moments. If you go into this with expectations of heavy style over substance like the other comment said, then yes this is worth it.

Oh, you're totally right. My mistake. I had no idea 2.0 existed.

Fandango has what appears to be the same deal. I grabbed it there since I have Fandango cash, and discovered instead of a selectable Japanese language track, they have a separate "original Japanese language version" in the bonus content, where the English subtitles are the hardcoded on the video.

You're not wrong. But no one asked about the 2017 Scarlett Johansson version - they asked about the remastered original (2004) vs 2.0 (2008).

2.0 added CGI and visual effects, adjusted the color grading, and polished up some of the frames to make it look cleaner and sharper. But the vast majority of fans prefer the classic analog feel of the original, self included. The only real improvement of 2.0 is a surround mix for home theaters, but that's not worth the visual trade-off.

Definitely go for the 2004 remaster - it's the original 1996 film with a clean HD transfer. Skip 2.0. Since you brought it up, the 2017 live action version is worth watching once just for the visuals IMO, but it pales in comparison to the original.

Not true. The remaster was released in 2004 - it was a clean HD transfer of the original 1996 film.

2.0 was released in 2008 and is way more than just a remaster. It includes recolored scenes, entirely new CGI sequences, updated lighting and digital effects, a partially re-recorded 5.1 surround dub (same actors, new readings for certain scenes), and a remastered soundtrack with new effects. Because of these changes, 2.0 is considered a reinterpretation, not a faithful restoration.

The vast majority of fans prefer the original/remaster over 2.0.

Depends who you ask. But it seems the vast majority of fans, self included, prefer the original 1996 version, which received a remaster in 2004.

2.0 came out in 2008. It changed some things, and added a lot of CGI sequences which look pretty Janky IMO.
