This ASUS TUF F16 is a strong value gaming laptop for 1080p and 1200p play, pairing an i7 14650HX, RTX 5070, 1TB SSD, 16GB RAM, Thunderbolt 4, Windows Hello, and a 90Wh battery. The mil spec chassis and larger non OLED 16 inch screen add to its appeal, and the delivered unit confirmed the 1TB drive. The main concerns are the heavy chassis, the Walmart spec sheet confusion, and repeated hinge durability complaints on prior TUF models. The 8GB mobile GPU memory also limits confidence for 1440p gaming, especially in newer titles.

  • The laptop includes a MIL-SPEC chassis, Thunderbolt 4, Windows Hello, and a nice battery for everyday use.

  • The delivered unit reportedly includes a 1TB SSD even when the Walmart spec page shows a mismatch.

  • The model FX608JPR-WH74 reportedly ships with a 1TB SSD according to multiple checked sites.

  • The laptop can reportedly run 1440p on an external display for higher-resolution gaming setups.

  • The RTX 5070 mobile VRAM amount is confusing across spec sheets, and some reports warn it may be limited to 8GB.

  • 1440p gaming may run into VRAM bottlenecks, and external 1440p monitoring may be a safer plan than relying on the internal panel.

  • The laptop can be heavier than a Legion 5, which may matter for portability and daily carrying.

  • The MIL-SPEC durability claim can be undermined by hinge and LCD cover failures after normal desk opening and closing.

There is no RTX-5070 with 8GB VRAM; it is 12GB. Clearly, that Walmart spec sheet has issues. As I said, I will confirm this all tomorrow when received.
All the mobile parts are cut down since the 3000 series.

Either could run 1440p on an external. I'd personally go with the Katana for the extra storage. Both laptops are spec'd the same pretty much.
Edited because the specs on the walmart pages seem to mismatch. Looked like the TUF only had 512GB on the spec page, but the description says it's 1TB.
The part number is FX608JPR-WH74. All sites I checked say 1TB SSD.

What? That is totally inaccurate. All the 5070 mobile chips have 8 GB of RAM. The 5070 ti is the one with 12 GB of RAM.
Yup -

Desktop 5070/4070 have 12 GB.
Laptops/mobile have 8GB.

You should find the Walmart spec sheet is right in this case and it has 8GB of VRAM.

How is "FHD+" 2.5K? Marketing wizardry? Description of the laptop on the page says FHD+. This is no better than the black Friday deals.

Agree on 16gb of ram but I wouldn't have traded in the legion for this
You'd prefer the Legion with half the storage, 5060 vs 5070, and an inferior CPU? Why, because of OLED? Beyond the display, this seems to be objectively better and more powerful across the board. My local Walmart still has the Legion I returned yesterday, but I'm very interested to know what about that machine is better than this.

Yeah even though this is a good deal (close to the $1k 4070 TUF from last year), it is still being bottlenecked by Nvidia's cut down VRAM. OK at the native display res of 1200p (yeah 2.5K is BS) but go up to 1440p and you will have some problems. Probably better to just hold off upgrading if you are on an 8GB card from 30 or 40 series.

See I was highly considering getting this for 1440P gaming but reading this made me hit the brakes hard. Was going to hook it up to an external 1440P monitor.

I mean it will work fine for older and less demanding games, but you should not expect much from the future. The issue is that Nvidia is so greedy that you have to step up all the way to a 5070 Ti to get 12GB VRAM which is good enough for 1440p with modern titles. Depends on what you have already and since you want 1440p I would not recommend it despite being a good deal. See benchmarks in games you are looking at playing to see if they require more VRAM.

Yeah currently have nothing. I mainly play on my Series X. Might just end up getting the prebuilt I saw with the arc b580. It has 12GB vram and cost $999. In a sense guess I'm trying to be cheap and achieve 1440p but I also don't want to invest in something that may collect dust.

If you are getting a pre-built I'd recommend either waiting for a 4070 Ti refurb deal or if you only want new, then looking at some of the 5060 Ti deals. Those have 16GB VRAM and will be limited more by the performance of the card than memory usage.

I think we are going off track here. I was debating which computer is better all around between these two, assuming they are identical prices:

1. ASUS TUF F16 Gaming Laptop: i7 14650HX, 16" 2.5K, 1TB SSD, 16GB RAM, RTX 5070
2. Lenovo Legion 5 15.1" OLED WQXGA 165Hz NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 AMD Ryzen 7 260 AI Gaming Laptop (2025 Model) 16GB RAM 512GB
Someone earlier in the thread said I am making a mistake picking #1 over #2, and I am clueless as to why.

Ah, yes, I stand corrected. I still think the Asus is the clear choice here compared to the Legion 5. Prove me wrong.

Yes, I was indeed confusing the 5070 laptop with the desktop.
