it was sold and shipped by amazon when it was posted - now it appears to be dead

Go for gfci. The price difference is small but it's safer and is required everywhere now (for new construction)

I got a 10pack by accident at the big box. I didn't know TR had some important meaning-tamper resistant. A few of them were crazy hard to plug something into. I didn't want to throw them away even at $10/10pack and much less on sale. Some others I installed were reasonable force to plug things into. I won't buy these again.
