The fact of the matter is, this is nostalgia food. We all loved it as kids. Some of us developed better pallets and moved on to the (slightly) better cheese sauce varieties, which do seem to have a little more difference in taste. Some of us kept eating the powdered stuff all the time, and it's never really lost its appeal.
I call this stuff "Kids Mac and Cheese," because well, kids love it. They all pretty much taste the same. My kids determine the quality of the M&C by the color. The closer it looks to the Kraft color, the more they like it. I don't expect my lil to explain why the generic stuff doesn't taste as good, but even my oldest can't articulate it.
I have noticed a similar phenomenon with the canned pasta stuff. Spaghetti O's and Chef Boyardee ravioli were my jam. I moved on, and bought some ravioli for nostalgia sake once. It was one of the worst things I've eaten in my life. But also one of the best....when I was a kid.
