Got this about a month ago when Lenovo was clearing them out for $450. At that price it was a no brainer. Haven't seen it that low since. Upgraded from a 3060 Ti. Practically doubled average fps in games. Good upgrade from older generations, probably not worth the price to upgrade if you have a 40 series card.

Is there any discernible difference between the MSI version and the PNY? I just ordered PNY 5070 10 minutes ago for $499 (+tax). I see PNY is a bit larger in size due to 3 fans. Anything else?

I am looking for a $450 before X-mas, be a gift to myself, otherwise going to 9070

Wouldn't get this over a 9070 unless it was $350 since in only has 12 gb ram vs 16 gb on the 9070

Is this a good upgrade from the Gtx 1080?

Literally any current generation card is going to be a good upgrade from a GTX 1080. Just stay away from 8GB variants. You will see a huge upgrade with an RTX 5070. The only thing is you will need a CPU/MB from the last few generations to take full advantage of the card. If you are still rocking a 7th gen i5, you will be leaving a lot of performance on the table.

AMD is still catching up in a lot of things, such as DLSS and ray-tracing. One can argue about drivers (AMD has caught up quite a bit, but Nvidia still leads). Frame generation is superior on NVIDIA if you use that.
For gaming, 9070 is better for rasterization and in the long-term. I don't think too far ahead because most people don't keep the same gpu for 3+ years. At 1440p with DLSS 4, the 5070 has a performance advantage even with 12gb vram and significantly more support than AMD's FSR.
If you do video editing or run AI locally, the 5070 would whoop the 9070. ROCM is catching up, but it's still quite a way behind CUDA. For AI, it's not even close.
Overall, if you use the card for more than just gaming, I think the 5070 is the better option. For gaming, 9070 is better.

Yea I'm not in the LLM space much. I had a 1070Ti since day one but last year I couldn't really load many games at 1080p60 without having to make severe cuts due to vram space. So I bit the bullet and got a 4080 super to try to mitigate any future issues from vram. I guess I'm one of those who waits until it dies.

The issue with AMD is not the hardware, it is the driver. So many bugs.

From what I understand if AI then 5060ti and if gaming then 5070.

People say this, but I've owned several from both brands, and they both have their driver problems. I can't say that either one has been too bad though. I would honestly give the slight edge to AMD on drivers, not least because they usually seem to keep improving the cards for years, so they end up quite a bit better than when you bought them.
Of course, there are plenty of other considerations. If you need top tier performance, you go Nvidia. If you need AI or cuda, you go Nvidia. If you intend to ever run on Linux, get AMD. If you want raster bang for buck, get AMD. They both have their use cases.
