For those of us that are long-time Gold members, then Ultimate members used to topping up 3 years at a time for $150, this still feels bad

Yeah I know, I was only stocked up until Aug 2027 when the price hike hit. I've been a GPU member since 2019, I love it. Compared to the deals we used to get, it does suck but it's the way of things. I look at it this way, I got over with crazy deals for years, so I'm not as salty about it as some. Still beats paying to try games or find out I don't like them after buying.
I've done the opposite. For the first time since 2011, I cancelled my Live/Gamepass subscription and went focusing on only buying games I intend to play. I think the days of drinking from the firehose of games has left me desensitized to sitting down and actually playing them like I used to.

They don't know any better. They were groomed by capitalists. Consumption is all they know.

I would agree having physical is best. Nowadays though for games, they require the disc AND a download. Meaning not all of the game is included anymore.

To which games do you refer? Even the free offerings via Microsoft are now being pushed to have at a minimum the Essential offering in order to use voice and text in game. Corporate greed like this is pushing me more and more back into PC gaming. I already pay for internet, which with PC gaming allows chat and text without having to pay an extra fee.

Blockbuster was just the start. To be fair, nobody knew what a hellscape capitalism would become back in the 90s.

Convenience. That's the word of the day. Convenience is what consumerists, especially in the US would trade anything for. US citizens are currently trading their rights away for convenience, but that's another topic and I know SD staff gets delete-happy when politics are involved.

Convenience is just another one of those things the corporations like to dangle in front of you to get your hooked. Once you're hooked and all the competition is gone, they give you the ol' rugpull and suddenly you're paying more for less. Look at Amazon, what happened to the "2 day guarantee" with Prime? Did you forget already?

I think it's hilarious that everything I'm saying seems to be this mythical "Sony" talking point. I haven't owned a Sony product since Playstation 2 lmao. Sony wants to do the same thing these other companies are doing to you. It seems like one of these companies has got you by the balls. Hook line and sinker. My hope is that they're paying you.
I'm curious how old you are because no, Blockbuster was not the start. Before Blockbuster there were local video rental stores everywhere. And you did not OWN movies back in the day. Movies on VHS were expensive - like $80 back in the eighties and nineties before dvds released. But regardless, the great thing is people have OPTIONS. IF you want to "own" the video game, you can! Game Pass is not mandatory. Netflix is not mandatory. You can go out and buy all the phyiscal media you want. But some of us prefer convenience. It sounds like you do not. And that's fine. You do you.

Unless they just changed it, I've played a lot of free to play games with party chat on Xbox. It wasn't always like that, they added that a few years ago, it used to require Gold. I hate not being able to own any resalable game with PC, lets you play most games for the cost of shipping/ebay fees on console or you can get something back if you're sick of a game. But yeah, no free multiplayer on non-free-to-play. PS5 has the best physical library and their controller hurts my hands, lot of trade-offs.

So the Xbox site says it converts to 40% for ultimate. If I'm correct that's 4.8 months of ultimate.. Which ain't bad
If you're a current GPU subscriber, this converts to 90 days of GPU.The 40% conversion is for people who currently have GPE and upgrade to GPU.

Stupid distinction. I used Blockbuster because that's what the poster used to represent rental stores.

It's funny you mention options, because the end goal of these greedy farks is to ensure that you won't have options in the future. The best way to ensure you no longer have an option is to keep forking over your money for literally nothing in return.

Yeah, you prefer convenience but at what cost? Consumerist pigs drag everyone down with them because they're too stupid to spend their money wisely - they only think about the base level transaction of how much convenience they get today. How convenient would it be to just be able to walk into a teleporter to go anywhere you want to go? But you won't think of all the exercise you'll never get. You won't regret your decisions until you have a stroke from poor cardiovascular health. That is the problem with people mindlessly consuming without giving a single thought about the long term ramifications of their purchasing behavior.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Subscription pigs should be shamed for their contribution towards the death of this industry.

or maybe, just MAYBE it's a convenience trade off for people who don't WANT to keep whatever it is and just want the convenience they offer. It's pretty simple, subscriptions don't preclude anyone from buying anything.. but people act like it does. It's not an either/or. I buy what I want and "rent" what I want from where I want.Did you have the same complaint with blockbuster? or would you buy every movie you watched during the vhs days?I doubt that was the case, I'm sure you went there plenty assuming you're old enough. If not, than you don't know what you're talking about. This practice has gone on forever, it's just digital now and more convenient. I didn't buy every nintendo game I rented in the 80s and 90s, I didn't buy every movie I rented from blockbuster or hollywood.Your premise is way off base and your definition of anti consumer is wildly inaccurate.and to your purcahse "support the devs" idea, it's the same crap, another sony fanboy talking point. the devs get paid plenty for putting games in gamepass, if they didn't they wouldn't do it.It's SONY and square who screw devs out of $$ for games. I guarantee devs on xbox don't make pennies on the dollar. They negotiate a deal up front and if both sides are happy, what's the problem? you know better than the people who signed the deal and know what's better for them than they do?
This guy gets it.
