In my experience Xfinity will provision you 600Mbps with DOCSIS 3.0, so it's still useable for lower speed plans
Right, but in my area the old 3.0 cannot auto set-up. So the shitty company charges me 150 something like set-up fee. That price could buy a mighty router you know

Previously Xfinity used to charge for people renting their modems so people used to buy their own. Now looks like they are no longer charging that fee. So no point buying one

If the former user owes money on their internet provider account you will not be able to activate this with the same internet provider .

This is a 16x4 modem so ideally you want to use this with speeds 200mb or below. I know it says 400m in the description but some ISPs wont let you use it for higher tiers. Cox Communications for example only supports plans up to 250m for 16x4 modem. This is basically a SB6183 with a router built in.

Also this modem uses the Puma chip which is hot garbage. You will get packet loss and intermittent slows speeds. This is an old device.

When buying refurbished cable modems they are somes on a previous customer's account. If it is then the call center rep cannot add it to your account. You will be forced to return it.

very few ISPs are still supporting 3.0. Do your homework.
I'm a network engineer. Plenty of ISPs are still using docsis 3.0 modems. You get better upload speeds with 3.1 but this will still work if you are on a low speed tier. I even have some clients that use a docsis 2.0 modem to this day and do not want to upgrade because their service is working fine, which is ok with me because i dont have to call the isp to schedule an upgrade.

No. That's why he said very few are still supporting it. This moden literally won't even connect to most ISPs.
The moden won't, but what about the modem?

Cox will still activate 3.0 if your're on a lower tier.

Would you have any middle of the road budget options for like 400-600 down?

I have SB8200 and it works just fine. It can handle up to 1gb. The Docsis 4.0 is coming soon.
