The Sonos just seems to have more clarity and a 'cleaner' tone. And the bass output and accuracy is unreal on the Sonos.
That said, I still prefer the Q990D simply because of the price tag with EDU/EPP discount. The Sonos is better, but not enough to justify 2-3x the cost, unless you're really into movies. At that point though, I would probably put the effort into a proper AVR setup.
Costco pricing:- Sonos Arc Ultra $879.99- Eras 100 pair $319.99- Gen 3 sub $549.99Total = $1,749.97 + $140 gift cards = $1,609.97
And bonus for Executive Members getting 2% back = $35

This Sonos bundle centers on the Arc Ultra, Sub 4, and two Era 100s, and the strongest draw is its clean, wireless home theater setup with standout clarity for movies, music, and dialogue. The Sub 4 adds powerful, accurate bass, and the system is easy to set up in the Sonos app with HDMI eARC and room tuning. The main tradeoffs are price and value versus Samsung, Bose, or a wired receiver setup, plus the Era 100 rears are not Atmos speakers. Coupon and pricing glitches also showed up for some carts.
Common Questions (6)
For movies and TV, the systems are described as close, while Sonos is slightly better for music and dialogue clarity. The Sonos sub is also called more accurate, but Samsung is much cheaper on EPP/EDU pricing, so value favors Samsung unless you want the Sonos ecosystem.
It is described as excellent for movies and music, with easy app setup and automatic sound tuning. It may not make ordinary TV shows sound dramatically better, and some buyers feel the price is hard to justify unless you want the Sonos ecosystem and cleaner wireless setup.
At $1649, the Arc Ultra plus the two Era 100s is already around $1500, so the Sub 4 is effectively the extra value in the bundle. That makes the package attractive if the listed price applies to your cart.
Yes. The deal shows $2436 for one shopper and $1785 for the white option for another, so the advertised $1649 price does not appear to apply universally.
The Bose Ultra with Bass Module 700 is described as sounding better in demos, especially for dialogue with its AI dialogue mode. Sonos is still considered very good, but Bose has a reported reboot issue that can require unplugging it about once a month.
Yes, the bundle can be configured with Era 300s for $350 more. The 300s are described as a bigger improvement over the 100s and worth about $200 more each.

Also another minor point is that back 2 or 3 years ago, SONOS strictly only had an app for apple phones. Don't know if they changed that since then.

You realize you can get two JBL 690s ($998), a 12" Klipsch Reference R-12SW ($229), and a JBL MA310 receiver ($220 - upgrade to the MA510 for $100 more) for less than what you are paying on a sound bar. And with option A, you can always add a center, rears, second sub...
Haters gonna hate, but at some point you are paying for the brand more than the end user experience.
I got tired of all the wires and wanted something with more style, Sonos is simpler to operate and a much cleaner/minimalist install. Giant tower speakers and a center channel just don't work for me anymore, also most people cannot operate a receiver so easier for other household members.
I went from a nice atmos onkyo receiver and a 5.1 setup of klipsch synergy S3's to the first Arc, Sub 4, Era 300's and really love the sound and setup. If you're ok with all the wires and complexity you can def get better sound, but not worth the cost and space to me.
Well, the slightly older version of this setup. It's one of the best soundbar setups you can buy.

I had ordered the Q990D with the EPP discount for like $620 when that was on here recently but then Samsung did the whole order cancellation thing and their customer service was otherwise useless about resolving the situation so I figured I'd jump on this instead.
I miss when stores used to just carry loads of sound EQ. Hard to get a good idea of how these things all compare.

I'm down voted team 3.1 for the value. 99% of content is either authored in 2.1 or mono. Rears are cool, but content that leverages it is very limited. Atmos 7.2 is even worse. You'll have some forum bruhs pumping their chests over it, but almost all mainstream music is 2.0. To me, subwoofers drop off significantly - range bound, additional bass power just takes away from the remaining mid to high.
I did do an experiment where I used ceiling facing Atmos speakers as rears, and that occasionally was beneficial. Again - most content isn't even 5.1 in 2025. That cleaned up the speaker wire issue, as running speaker cables through wires is a pain or expensive. And running them on the floor and just throwing a rug over it will either piss the wife off or give the cat something to play with. 😹
I'm not bashing on this product. I'm just trying to make people realize that good speakers can last decades, and sound bars will get out of date or have electronics that fail. Invest once in a nice set of mains and a nice center and you're set. The sound bar will eventually fail or be deprecated by evolving technology. But speakers currently can reproduce almost perfectly the range of hearable sound, so the only real areas to improve are form factor and aesthetics.
