These are great if you are nervous about getting your door kicked in or you have wandering toddlers who can turn a deadbolt. Only downside is having to explain how they work to your guests who struggle to figure out the mechanism

These can be defeated from the opposite side by a thin piece of plastic, but they're GREAT for childproofing.

I think you're mistaken. These actually latch on to where you have to kind of slide them along the door to disengage. There is no way a piece of plastic could do that from the outside.

Picked up a different set a few days ago... Are there notable differences between this set from OP vs. https://a.co/d/eKHMfqs that commands 2x the price?

I haven't tried it but I can see how it technically could be possible. It would have to be a shim of exactly the right rigidity/flex though. Rigid enough to be able to push the "arm" in and then up and over without collapsing (not easy because it takes a reasonable amount of force to do this) but flexible enough to fit and maneuver inside in the first place.

I have this for my garage side door and someone definitely would not be able to shimmy it open from the other side. It doesn't simply lift up. You have to pull it out and then lift up. It's also not one smooth action as it always takes some force to jiggle it out of the latch and then lift up. If you drill this into the frame with some 3" screws (and do the same with the door hinges), that door's not getting kicked open by anyone unless you take an axe to the door - and at that point you might as well just break a window.Keep in mind this needs to be flush with the door so if you have any sort of trim or moulding around the door, this won't work unless you cut the trim to fit this in.

Just ensure the gap is not wide enough for anything like a shim to fit through it.

Not really. Just ensure the gap is not wide enough for anything like a shim to fit through it. The video was debunked.

Honest question: If kids and possibly guests can't figure out how to open it and it's on your front and back doors - is it much different in concept of risk than using a double cylinder deadbolt, which is illegal to do in many places because then people can't get out during a fire?
Time for training day for deadbolts
