A very common use for these are to save you from getting a ticket when cities drop the speed limit from 80 to 40 for a few hundred feet, such as at the bottom of a hill to fatten up revenue.

I don't "speed" often (destroys mpg efficiency) and even then is typically 4-7 over. All of this is the well within the normal flow of traffic. Radar detector helps remind me to mind my speed and protect against the small chance that a cop may decide to penalize even a marginal speed overage.

Not everyone using one of these is the maniac going 20mph faster than everyone else, weaving in and out of traffic, though if a ban on these would prevent those dudes, then by all means bring it on.

Sorry, I meant updating the software, not upgrading to a higher R7/8. I haven't updated my R3 since buying it.

Updating helps with the chattiness of the unit. They build in more filtering for BSM detection systems.

I love my R8 which I bought two years ago as a refurb and have no issues with updating.

Thanks for that! Once I switched to Advanced mode it's much quieter and still accurate to police presence. It's saved me numerous times, especially when, like the top poster above mentioned, speed limits lower drastically in local areas.

This is an incredible investment to make if you've got a lead foot. Driving nearly 50k miles/year, I absolutely love mine and couldn't imagine not having this aid. Recently bought the R8 Companion app and wish I had done so sooner. It's very, very helpful especially when using it in conjunction with other apps like Highway Radar and Waze. Results vary by location (ex. if LE agencies local to you use laser instead of Ka radar, having a RD won't be as helpful as by the time you're notified of a laser detection, the cop has already locked your speed unlike Ka band where you're notified miles in advance allowing you the opportunity to slow down prior to being locked.) This is hands down one of the best and most useful tech products I've ever owned and it has saved me a TON of money and trouble.

I've heard that the company went downhill since the owner passed away, like bad customer service or taking forever to ship out products. Not sure if they've improved. Also, they only recently released an update for photo radar for the v1 gen2 while other companies, like Uniden, already had the feature for awhile now for their devices.

After a lot of reading, it seems like the best option is the R7 with the international firmware.
