About this title:
  • After more than a decade of stability or improvement, the mental health of adolescents plunged in the early 2010s. Rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm, and suicide rose sharply, more than doubling on many measures. Why?
  • In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the "play-based childhood" began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the "phone-based childhood" in the early 2010s. He presents more than a dozen mechanisms by which this "great rewiring of childhood" has interfered with children's social and neurological development, covering everything from sleep deprivation to attention fragmentation, addiction, loneliness, social contagion, social comparison, and perfectionism. He explains why social media damages girls more than boys and why boys have been withdrawing from the real world into the virtual world, with disastrous consequences for themselves, their families, and their societies.
  • Most important, Haidt issues a clear call to action. He diagnoses the "collective action problems" that trap us, and then proposes four simple rules that might set us free. He describes steps that parents, teachers, schools, tech companies, and governments can take to end the epidemic of mental illness and restore a more humane childhood.

Probably, but I also think withholding screens from children while surrounded by adults addicted to them is part of the problem. It's like having a party fueled by alcohol and drugs, inviting children, then telling them not to touch them.

You'll read this book, then never even think of handing a child a phone until the age of 16.

Great deal if you combine with the ongoing buy one get one 50% off. Works out to $6.37 per book.

Edit: the extra copy would make a great gift to other parents

Interesting hypothesis but likely highly reductive. The impacts of social media and over-busy/disengaged parenting coupled with societal pressures are likely much more impactful. "Coddling of the American Mind" is also a riveting read. The author likely has a point but also not sure their logic is a primary causal factor.

Indeed, modeling good behavior is generally always a good parenting plan. Overall, Haidt is quite un-nuanced in a world full of complexity and nuance. If kids are going to use technology as adults, teaching them how to use it in healthy ways seem better than forbidding it.

It's up to the reader to decide the value of a book's contents, but I will say this - there is a of criticism about the content and conclusions contained within. I would recommend reading / watching some reviews and/or counter content before buying.

Also - you can find this book in any goodwill. Even at this price - it is not a "slick" deal.

Generations were raised like that and we are not as anxious as these younger people. We knew adults were different from children -todays parents and children think children are too stupid or too whatever to understand the difference - I know a lot of adults are that stupid

I bought this last year. Both Jon Haidt (author) and Scott Galloway (forward) are profs at NYU are both amazing investigators. Great Book.
If you have friends/family that are parents or teachers get this for them NOW, (before it's too late)!

We have third phone in the house, a dumb flip phone, for emergencies when the teens go out. It's crazy seeing how fast their heads spin when the occasional text comes in. And the idea that you don't have to respond OMG RIGHT THIS SECOND.
No way they should have smartphones at that age.
