Does Deluxe+State mean that there's no additional cost for PREPARING or for FILING state taxes?
If I get the non-state version, will I be able to prepare state taxes for free?

+State only helps prepare the state taxes -- not file. It is also not free to e-file through the H&R Deluxe thick client except for 1 or 2 states.

What +State gives you, is one single download entitlement for a state of your choice.

Not the original poster and I don't know the connection with the BBB, but the present admin killed off direct file and has laid off IRS officials that were working on making filing easier. Intuit and hr block heavily lobby against tax reforms that make filing easier.

Unless they changed it you have to pay to file state. I bought it last year thinking I could e-file federal and state. So this time I bought federal only.

The One Big, Beautiful Bill includes provisions to terminate the IRS Direct File program, which allowed eligible taxpayers with simple returns in 12 states to file their federal taxes for free and directly with the IRS. So this option will not be available for the upcoming tax season (for Tax Year 2025 returns).

The tax software companies heavily lobby for it, and combined with the cuts in the IRS the program was canceled completely.

In those earlier years (2017-2020), I believe I was getting Deluxe + State either free or under $15.

It's only been in the past few years that I have had to suck it up and pay more than $15. Luckily though, I have been able to get others to help me subsidize my purchase by offering to share my code for a $5 AGC.

At this current price of effectively, $30 for Deluxe + State - I believe this is a BAD, BAD, Bad deal - I can't believe I'm seeing 20+ thumbs up - maybe the thumbs up are from those who have paid $50 in the past and they think they're getting a deal - I can see a long-time SD'er thinking this is a good deal.

And NewEgg, I know you watch up here - Your prices SUCK for this software - you need to lower them - where's those crappy other software rebates you would couple with this deal in the past to make it free???
