Chipotle does this a lot. Once in awhile, they send free guac (aka bait) in the app, to customers. Hoping customers buy $11-$12+ entrees, drink, and maybe more.

Other restaurants like McDonalds do similar stuff. Give free fries or discounted fries or deals on their cheap items. Example: on fridays, free medium fries with any $1+ purchase. Hoping customers buy other things, that makes more money for the company.

Yes. The only way to throw it back at them is to know the value of the item and make sure it is more than the minimum. If you know of another item that is priced right at the minimum, even better.

For the medium fries, I figure I might as well purchase something limited time, if I am going to get anything.

Chipotle is too easy to figure out. This deal is not very good because the item is priced at less than $5. Then again, none of their items are worth the price, but people on this site love anything Chipotle (might as well post it), even when they get national attention for infectious food.
