This would have been a decent but not truly exceptional deal several months ago, before the ram apocalypse. However, considering how ram prices have at minimum doubled with no end to that trend in sight, this is an excellent value for building a budget computer.

The r5 5500 is essentially an r5 5600g with the integrated graphics removed. It has 6 cores and 12 threads. While it still utilizes the zen 3 architecture (two generations old) and is on the last generation am4 socket, there are a couple additional downsides compared to standard zen 3 cpus. Most notably, compared to the r5 5600 it has half as much L3 cache (16mb instead of 32mb), and only supports pcie gen3 rather than gen4. This shouldn't make too major of a difference for a budget build, it mainly affects gaming and certain storage intensive productivity application performance, but it's still worth noting. This cpu does not have integrated graphics, you will need a discrete graphics card for display output. Certain gpus, particularly low end modern gpus like the rtx 5060ti and below, use a pcie x8 interface instead of x16, and will perform notably worse with pcie gen3. Specifically avoid the rx 6500xt, which has a pcie x4 interface. The 5500 comes with a wraith stealth cpu cooler included, while that cooler is rather mediocre it should be sufficient for a low powered cpu like the 5500.

Motherboard specs: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B...cification
As far as I can tell, the feature set of this board seems pretty solid for the price, though I wouldn't plan to upgrade to a 12+ core cpu on it. There are a somewhat concerning amount of 1* reviews on newegg, but quite a few of those seem related to people not flashing their bios. It uses the b550 chipset, which is the midrange option of the most modern chipset generation for the am4 socket. Keep in mind that with the r5 5500 cpu you will not be able to utilize pcie gen4, even though this board supports it. As a last gen am4 socket board there is no upgrade path. In the past I would've recommended even budget buyers try to get a low end am5 build, since the price premium was generally more than worth it, but with the current ram price situation am5 builds are much less viable at the low end currently.

The 16gb (2x8) ddr4 3200mt/s CL16-18-18-38 team group ram seems like standard middle of the road memory. The speed and timings aren't anything special, but it's not going to drag down even a midrange am4 build either. Team group is more of a budget brand, but they're overall reputable. Several months ago this ram would've been worth around $40, however with the price of ram skyrocketing it's worth over $90 easily (and will likely only increase in price).

The mouse is a filler item used to activate the 10% pc builder savings for adding at least 4 separate items to the newegg pc builder tool, at $12 it's the cheapest qualifying item I could find. You can substitute for other items that have the "Combo for an additional 10% off" badge in the pc builder tool. There are several other mice in a similar price range that qualify, and for a few dollars more you could get a qualifying cpu cooler. There are also some cheap cases, power supplies, and ssds you could add, though those are a few times the price of the mouse.

That's literally the lowest tier CPU available for the B550 Chipset, AM4 platform.

AMD Ryzen 5 5500 doesn't support PCIe 4.0 and it won't work well with rtx 50xx (e.g. rtx 5060) video cards.

There's a 4100... and technically the 1000 series still work on AM4 B550

The lowest tier officially supported cpu on the motherboard in the deal is the AMD Ryzen 3 3100, a quad core zen 2 cpu from early 2020. I've anecdotally heard of some b550 boards that even supported the original zen 1000 series cpus. I do agree that the cpu in this deal is rather mediocre, and list out several of it's demerits in my prior post in this thread. That being said, considering the ongoing ram apocalypse, I'd say you'd be hard pressed to find a better value bundle for those looking to build a budget machine. I'd be happy to be proven wrong though, if you find something better please post it Smilie

"the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Ti uses a PCIe x8 interface, meaning it connects with 8 PCI Express lanes, not the full 16, which can slightly impact performance on older PCIe 3.0 systems but is generally fine on modern PCIe 4.0/5.0 motherboards, though it can matter in VRAM-heavy scenarios. This x8 connection offers about 32 GB/s on PCIe 4.0 and 64 GB/s on PCIe 5.0, significantly less than a full x16 link, but still plenty for most gaming, though some demanding games show noticeable drops on PCIe 3.0."
I think the 5500 should be paired with older GPUs or a cheap GPU that uses x16 lanes like the B580

The PCIe 3.0 limit of the 5500 chip really bugs me though. Not just for the GPU but if you plan on using a half decent (modern) gen 4 nvme boot drive...
Considering ram prices, going to be hard to get a great deal on most anything really new these days it seems.

I was trying to be specific to the B550 chipset when I brought up the 5500 until I saw your responses and realized I forgot that some motherboard manufacturers were able to enable chips that released alongside B450 and B350 to work on the B550 chipset through backwards compatibility. Talk a/b racing to the bottom, lol.

This crap is starting to get old. First video cards went to the moon and now this.
I'll be holding onto my AM4 and the cheap used GTX 1660 Super I bought for $75 a couple years ago..

Tempting for a build to replace my dad's computer which decided to give up at the worst possible time. May wait it out.

This CPU makes for a pretty decent productivity PC. I use it for work, running Fedora. I have it undervolted and overclocked, and it runs nice and cool. I do have single core bottlenecks every now and then, but things work themselves out eventually. Will eventually drop in a 5700x or something when I find a good deal.
