This open-box OmniBook X Flip stands out as a strong value for its Ryzen AI 7 350, 24GB of RAM, 1TB SSD, and 14 inch touch display. The 400 nit screen and solid build quality get positive callouts, and the price drop into the mid 300s makes the configuration feel unusually cheap. The keyboard draws the main criticism, with some calling it mediocre or crappy, though others find it comfortable for everyday typing. Open-box condition is the other risk, since packaging and screen damage can vary, making it a good fit if the specs matter more than perfect condition.

  • Students and office workers who type mostly on an external keyboard, because the built-in keyboard can feel crappy while the rest of the configuration is strong.

  • Laptop upgraders needing lots of memory and storage, because 24GB RAM and 1TB SSD make this a strong value at the price.

  • People wanting a bright 14-inch convertible for everyday tasks, because the display is listed at 400 nits and the keyboard is comfortable for non-gaming use.

  • Shoppers comfortable with open-box buys, because these units can arrive in excellent condition and still deliver solid build quality.

  • People expecting a pristine shipped open-box unit, because some arrivals have come loose in oversized packaging with bright screen spots or dead pixels.

  • Buyers who need a laptop with a great built-in keyboard, because the keyboard can feel crappy and HP chiclet boards are not as good as ThinkPad keyboards.

  • Gamers who want a fast-refresh screen, because the panel only offers 40Hz and 60Hz refresh options.

  • Shoppers who want a new-condition laptop at a much higher price point, because this deal is not a great buy at $670+ compared with other options.

I'm guessing that happened because the screen was damaged from the charger being shipped inside the package loosely, allowing it to impact the back of the lid repeatedly. I see that all the time as an IT guy, with people who fail to store their charger separate from the laptop. Bags have separate pockets for this reason!

I'd return it to BestBuy and ask for an exchange. I had a prominent dead pixel on one of my shipped Open Box Excellent purchases some years back, and a store manager at my local BB accepted a direct replacement to a new unit. That's very YMMV, of course.
Same here, and also an IT guy. I ended up exchanging it, but for a slightly different config; this one came in a proper 3rd party computer shipping box (ironic, since it didn't end up in a shipped order) like we would get from Lenovo for service/RMAs. It had a separate compartment for the charger and a plastic film to keep the laptop secured. The person who shipped the original device from the original store clearly did not give a F.
I came to realize how frustrating Open Box Exchanges are at Best Buy though. Online chat fed me a load of BS about what would happen (go to a store, exchange and you will keep your price...this applies to new items, not Open Box). In order to do a straight exchange, they have to have the same model in stock also in Open Box condition, which is rare. So I could either:

  1. Wait and see if they get more returns, which could actually have been likely after Christmas tbf
  2. Go to another location if they had an Open Box in stock
  3. Switch to a different model
I chose 3, much to my surprise since I really wanted the RAM and storage at this price, because I ended up speaking with an amazing Supervisor who basically took 50% off the discounted Open Box price of a slightly different config. I do kinda wish a direct replacement to a new unit was a possibility for me though, but even after working with this dude for nearly an hour, it wasn't happening lol.

Open box items are always a crapshoot. I feel like 75% of the time, they're practically new, but the other 25% of the time, someone trashes the unit.

You're definitely right about some stores being full of employees that just don't care. There's a BB in a college town 30 minutes from me, and they provide mediocre customer service, sometimes straight up terrible.

My local store on the other hand has always been good to me, and the open box items have usually been in new, or near new state every time I've bought something.
