I tried both and the FOV (field of view) on the 3 (Pancake) lens is way better than the 3S (Fresnel) for immersion. I'd say don't bother with VR if you're not going to pay for the optics because if you buy a 3S and don't even use it then it's a complete waste vs. paying a premium for the better optics.

Basically 3S has more distortion/artifacts on the edges of your vision and also blurrier visuals (you don't want this in VR).

Not worth the savings given that VR is essentially a luxury experience that nobody needs.

Yesterdays Amazon lightning deal for this new at $407 PLUS $100 amazon credit back (which i was able to match at BestBuy through some quirks) sets the new bar for being slick. So this at refurb price is just a knew jerk reaction afterwards. I think it's best to wait to see if any new deals repeat.

$250 for 3S at Costco with 12 month subscription might be a better deal than $216 for a refurb.

This is still a pretty sweet deal. I was in the market to upgrade my Quest 2 and luckily got the Amazon ($407+$100 credit) deal. That said, even knowing that deal existed, I would have still jumped on this. For what it's worth, my Quest 2 refurbished and seemed practically new. A lot of people have reported the same with Meta refurbished units.

If you've never used VR before the 3S will look plenty good. It's an entry level headset.

If you've never used VR then 3S will definitely be impressive for the price but I feel like it will just be novelty without the improved optics. I think this just leads to the 3S collecting dust on a shelf.

There is a reason there are so many refurbished Meta Quests...
