These are not worth all that much. It does say kindling, and it can do wood a bit larger than what I'd call kindling, but still small stuff. The large size has a max recommendation of 6.5 x 11.5. That's a barbie doll sized fire... or a larger fire that's a mess of a pile and takes 3x as much effort to cut the wood.

In any case, the selling point of these is really that you're not swinging the blade. The idea is that it's safer to have the blade fixed, and that's probably a fair point. However, note that you'll need a baby sledge or something similar to get enough force on the wood to split it. After you mount this thing to something large enough to be stable, the bottom of the target wood is sitting 8-12" off the ground making it more likely that a missed swing or glancing blow will get all the way back to your leg.

All else being equal, I suppose there is a non-trivial benefit in hitting yourself with a sledge rather than an axe. Better to use a proper stance/position, and wear steel toes.

I have a different, likely the original model, and it works great! But those cost $120. Grabbing one of these for up north cabin.

I purchased this (if not this exact one, something nearly identical) and ended up returning it. The edge started to roll over after very light use and it was not effective at splitting at all.

For $22 I'll give it a shot. I've been doing the ol "hold it with one hand and swing the hatchet with the other and let go really quick" method. Pretty soon I'll probably only be able to count to 9 on both hands. Thanks OP!

The mounting hardware included with this is absolutely hilarious If that's any clue as to the durability of the product, it might be good for splitting pieces of styrofoam

You could also try holding the wood, letting the hatchet rest on said wood, raising both together only a couple of inches from the block, taping lightly to mediumly so that the blade digs in holding the wood to the hatchet, then doing a stronger tap just holding the handle of the hatch.
