If you want something cheap, but not a crappy drone then look into Potensic Atom LT or SE models. The LT model I bought is now out of stock on ebay, but the Potensic Atom SE bundle with two batteries and a bag is $89 on ebay. This is a much better investment even as something to test out as you likely won't crash it (very stable) or lose it (strong connection) whereas these crappy $40 drones are waste of money.

Got a similar drone. Without hovering function. Gone with the wind in seconds.

Is this the best drone at this price point for somebody's first drone that just wants to play around a little bit and see if they want to invest further? Or is there something better at the same price point or maybe a little bit more. Like are there some features that I don't know about but I should definitely want for a beginner?

You need 2 different drones:
  • more expensive one with nice camera that holds position and easy to fly
  • cheap as hell one to have a blast flying around 100% manually and not worry if you break it.

Crazy I was only able to watch the rich kids nextdoor playing RC car during my childhood nowadays kids get drones to crash into pedestrians.

Thanks for the tip! For $5, you can get a third battery and the 3-battery charger. I'm trying that one! https://ebay.us/m/JkALAw

How does this compare to the holystone hs700e? That is $99 at Amazon rn (but does require FAA registration because of its weight).

In short, cheap drones do not have stupid proofing. If you fly too close to something, no software will purposely stop/prevent your drone from running into the object. Too windy? No software will prevent it from going with the wind. Probably also no battery check to prevent you from flying until juice is 0 and drone drops out of sky. Those are all issues that can happen to drones with poor or no stupid proofing. DJI (before they got banned from importing new stuff) had stupid proofing - sensors that see and software that stops you from running into walls, software that will hover in high winds, etc

Its not built like my DJI Mavic Air, but its perfect for a young one/beginner. You cant beat it for $35.
