The reason it gets hated on is that the Mass Effect series was not beloved for its gameplay. In fact each of the original trilogy is fairly clunky, and there were major changes to the gameplay in each as Bioware tried to get it right.
Mass Effect is considered one of the best trilogies of games ever because of the story, because of the depth and density of the world building, because of how authentic the characters and their relationships felt, and because of how well those things were executed even though the games give the player quite an unprecedented amount of choice and power over the way the story goes. To the point that the supporting characters in the third game could be totally different in the third game for one player vs another based on the choices you made playing the first two. It's really cool, and really made you feel an emotional connection to the story and the squad you built over the series. For every event that happens in the world, you can feel that there is well considered lore and believable character motivations for why things happen the way they do. It's all very well thought out.
Andromeda throws all that away. Yes it plays well and the actual mechanical gameplay is fun. But the characters are annoying and whiny. There's very little effort spent establishing relationships between characters. Many events that happen and drive the plot require heavy suspension of disbelief or logic to accept as realistic given the setup of the story. Not to mention the prime motivatios of the protagonists (forceful colonization) are just straight up uncompelling in comparison to those in the first games (existential threat). So yeah... It just fell really flat on feeling like a Mass Effect game, even though they finally got the gameplay itself right. If you just want to play an epic open world space shooter this is well worth the money and time.

Looking forward to ME4.
Also crazy that they basically had 18 months to put it together, and that it has more dialogue than ME 2 and 3 combined (though some is definitely not great).
Hoping ME4 knocks it out of the park.. DA Veilguard was not a good sign..
According to the devs., Mass Effect was the main source of inspiration.
