They generally have good performance for the price, and many find the user interface to be easier to use, especially for those older or not very good at tech. They aren't good if you want to sideload or heavily modify them, people who buy them want them to just work without extra steps.

They're kind of like the Apple in the streaming box space (ignore Apple TV being a thing) -- the devices just work. OS is easy to use. And I actually like the Roku Channel with all the free channels.

One great example is that most of the TVs in my household have horribly slow or buggy smart features despite being in the medium or top range of their brands (Samsung, LG, etc). These devices' interfaces are significantly faster to navigate, the streaming applications seem to be significantly less buggy, and they play quite well with my home automation setup.Overall, they're not for everyone, but for many, they're quite useful, and the price is right at $19.
