It's a 5 year old game that is pretty well optimized. The best GPU at time of release was the 2080 Ti.

In my opinion, it's the greatest VR game out there. For those who remember how revolutionary Half Life was to 2D gaming, Alyx is that to VR. I almost never play the same game twice and yet this one I've played through three times. You actually look down the sights of a gun to aim. You use cover. You have to reload in realistic gestures. So much to love about this game!

This will not work with Quest standalone. You need a capable PC to stream it from.

Half-Life: Alyx is still a standout VR shooter, with polished gunplay, realistic reloads, cover use, and strong replay value. It runs well on modern PC VR setups, and Quest 3 streaming through Steam Link can be easy to set up, with Wi Fi 6E helping wireless performance. Older cards like a GTX 1060 6GB or 1650 Super can run it, though stutters and tuning may be needed, and Quest standalone will not work. The game also has a deep mod scene, making it a lasting VR showcase.

  • Steam Link setup with Quest 3 and SteamVR can be straightforward and work well for wireless play.

  • Half-Life: Alyx can run on older GPUs like a GTX 1650 Super, making the PC requirement less intimidating.

    debiandave

  • Half-Life: Alyx supports a large mod community that can extend gameplay beyond the base campaign.

    euhenius

  • A Quest 3 paired with an RX 6650 XT can achieve smooth performance after system tuning and VRAM management.

    euhenius

  • Half-Life: Alyx will not work on Quest standalone and requires a capable PC to stream.

    lipton

  • Wireless streaming can contribute to stutters on a GTX 1060 6GB, and the cause may be unclear between GPU limits and streaming.

    justadewed

  • Steam Link on Quest lists an RTX 2070 recommended requirement, which can signal higher performance needs than some PCs provide.

    OrangeBlack

  • Running on a GTX 1060 6GB may be only playable with stutters, so smooth gameplay is not assured on lower-end hardware.

For playing this on Quest 3, what would the minimum GPU be? The Steam requirement looks too low.
I have quest 3 too. My RX 6650 xt 8G is barely enough to play HLA on HIGH settings . I had to tune my system to use minimum VRAM (close all other apps, disable SteamVR home), even though during the game 7.9G of VRAM is in use. I'm using SteamLink on quest 3 + SteamVR on PC. Running smooth.

The game itself is awesome, no doubt.
But there is also whole world of mods for the HLA !!! I'm slowly playing them all one by one. This is so cool!

Went to purchase and it's already in my library. I bought it 4 years ago. Dang, I need more free time.

Such a great game! I've been holding off playing it all the way through until I get the OLED panel for my Pimax Crystal Super. It already looks amazing though!!
Cables on a VR headset in 2025 is an absurdity
