Knipex pliers wrenches are a compact, smooth jaw alternative to Crescent wrenches that excel at gripping and holding without teeth. The set gets praise for strong bite, slim jaws, and durability, with the regular finish handling galvanized steel pipe and cast iron without deforming a tooth. It also stands out for automotive work and spring tensioned hose clamps. The main knocks are the small size spread in this set and the high price versus cheaper alternatives, especially for lighter DIY use. A solid specialty set if you will use it often.

  • DIYers and pros who need a compact pliers-wrench style tool for automotive work or spring-tensioned hose clamps because the grips are noticeably better than Channel Lock for those jobs.

  • People who want a high-quality channel-lock style tool for tough plumbing jobs because one commenter manhandled galvanized steel pipe and cast iron and didn't deform the teeth.

  • Tradespeople or frequent users comparing against bulkier imitations because commenters say the Knipex versions are generally less bulky and are worth it if you use them often.

  • Buyers who specifically want a pliers-wrench without teeth for the right task because commenters clarify these are pliers wrenches that don't have teeth and work for different jobs than a toothed version.

  • DIY and non-pro users who are price-sensitive because one commenter didn't see the value versus cheaper Channel Lock options (noted as about 1/4 the price).

  • People who were hoping for a more useful size spread because the set's sizes (6" and 7.5" close together) may be less useful than a version that includes a 12" plier/wrench.

  • Shoppers expecting a toothed channel-lock replacement because commenters say these are more of a replacement for Crescent wrenches and are not the same as a toothed version.

  • Heavy-duty mechanics doing engine changes because one commenter felt they might break under heavy load and said they're fine only since they're not doing heavy-duty work anymore.

I wished that the set included a 12" one instead of 6" as 6" and 7.5" close to each other.

I'm sure for pros these are great, but as a DIY and non tool snob, I haven't seen the value out of my Knipex. Channel Lok is 1/4 the price and plenty nice IMO.

These are really more a replacement for EDIT - Crescent wrenches.

I have the regular finish on this set. They're the best channel locks I've ever used. I had to manhandle a bunch of galvanized steel pipe and some cast iron with one and I don't think it deformed a single tooth.

Yeah, I got an Amazon Basics set of Knipex Cobra clones (not smooth parallel jaws like this set) with bigger sizes (7, 10, and 12 inch) a few months ago on sale for $14.38. Good enough for me!

How do these compare to the Kmart groove lock pliers I bought in 1980?

Just kidding. Big Grin

I have used a couple imitations (channellock, craftsman v series) and they aren't as good, generally too bulky. If you use often they are worth it.

I disagree. These pliers definitely grip better than channel locks. For most plumbing tasks, that doesn't matter, but if you're gripping spring-tensioned hose clamps or doing pretty much anything automotive, these are noticeably better pliers.

These are the pliers wrenches—they don't have teeth.

I love both these and my toothed version though. Different tasks but both great tools.
