Based on my recent experience, that trick no longer works. Just last week when I tried buying the $25 lan from Walmart for my second month, Walmart app and website kept erroring out. When I checked with Walmart support on that, they confirmed that that this specific plan is only valid as the very first recharge for a new line.

Happy to be corrected if anyone else was able to get this done successfully recently.

Seems to be some confusion on this thread lol. Perhaps I can help? The silver plan and phone is $45. You do need 60 days of PAID service to unlock. Walmart has a $25 monthly plan that will count for the second month. For $70 bucks and after 60 days, this phone WILL be unlocked.

Note on this: the phone is not unlocked after the silver plan is over.

Just to be clear on this, if I just pop out the sim card as soon as I get it and only ever use it for wireless access, Straight Talk isn't going to come back and attempt to bill me another $150 at some point are they?

so you did 1st month with ST and then just $15 for a 30 days in Tracfone and phone unlocked?
Yup

wait till the ST service expired then

Chat to "rebrand" as tracfone. I believe I could use the ordinal SIM to activate with $15 service

Then 30 days later call to unlock

If first free phone with $45 silver plan is ordered, can another one under same account be ordered as free phone and $15 line discount (i.e. $30 for 2nd silver line), i haven't activated/received first phone yet, so can't check.

Can I activate the phone then turn it off and let it sit for 30 days then rebrand to Tracfone and then add the Tracfone minutes that I bought from Target for 90 days. Will it unlock after 60 days then? Can the phone be turned off during all this time or does it have to be on to count as active?

Good question. I was wondering what would happen if I just never activated it and kept the sim card in.

Nothing happens, once you buy the phone you've paid for it. Phone comes with month of service so might as well use it.

Yes, I have had this work for me, but I've also had it create a nightmare and it coded it asa BYOD device and nullified the unlock. It was a nightmare to fix.

It's prepaid. Just do whatever you want if unlocking isn't in your plans.

Got deal last time. Got 2x and the $60 tablet. The phone is big so be aware of the size, the screen is great and the stylus is fine but it doesn't have the hover cursor like samgsung so you have to keep expectations in check. With a magnet case the phone works well for most uses. As an emulator it's great, I throw on one of the USB c android gamepad extensions and play NDS, PSP, and older emulations. I think for the form factor size and built in stylus leads to a really good NDS experience.
Any recommendations for gamepad extension?
Thanks
