Just remember, this is a sound bar with a separate subwoofer and to satellite speakers. It's really not fair to compare it to a set of independent speakers with a dedicated AV receiver.
If you're looking for a sound bar solution, this is a good way to go.
The jump in immersive from this is insane, without the hassle of figuring out how to install a bunch of ceiling speakers.
Highly recommend the 990 series!

If it's too much of a hassle to properly set it up, yes a soundbar may be good enough, you do sacrifice quality though.
I've seen a lot of reviews talking about less bass from the 990F sub vs the ported box on the 990D. Generally speaking, if you put the same driver in a ported box, it will have lower frequency extension than it would in a sealed box. The principle is fairly straightforward in that a driver can move more air when it's in a vented box. This is what people claim sounds "louder".
In a sealed box, that same driver will move less air, but the movement of the cone will be more controlled. This makes the bass sound "tighter" and improves the accuracy of the sounds to match the track. For anyone who appreciates the quality of their audio, a sealed woofer is almost always preferred. For those who want to jam out with the loudest, most obnoxious window shaking bass possible, a vented woofer is generally preferred.
