For a desktop with this performance, this is an outstanding value. Truly remarkable how cheap *great* computers have become.

This is a deal that's hard to beat. I was looking at picking up an inexpensive mini-PC by Minisforum or GMKTek but at $400 you'd have to be crazy to buy anything other than this. Nothing even comes close to the value proposition here.

Also check local marketplace listings and craigslist for Macbook Pros with broken screens. I picked up an M1 Pro 16GB/1TB for $300 and just removed the display and use as a headless slabtop. Works great.

I thought about doing that but the battery is a ticking time bomb don't want to have to deal with that

256 GB doesn't seem like much.

Easy to add external storage for cheaper that is almost or as fast as internal

It has optimized charging that limits when it's always connected.

Great deal. Bought one of these for my parents earlier this year. Mostly use it for Channels DVR. The five that were in stock earlier this morning @ Charlotte NC sold out pretty fast.

Thank you for this information. Going to look into it.
You can replace the system HDD or, as I did, buy a Satechi Mac mini M4 Hub and add an M.2 SSD for storage.

you can always buy 3rd party M4 SSD kit, bought mine months ago Sandisk 2TB for $167, it takes less than 10mins. to replace it, best bang for apple desktop eco system.
That same RAM is now over $300. Wink

I was able to do a PM only after purchasing it and then having them refund me the difference. Like another poster said, they couldn't PM it pre-purchase. I would have much rather purchased this at Microcenter but it's about an hour drive from me.

Thanks, OP! My first Mac after loving my AppleTV streaming box.

Sure, but batteries always have a risk of bulging/fire, especially as they age. Just personally didn't want to deal with that.

Being somewhat of a Mac newbie, if I add one of these to my mini and get a second SSD, would Time Machine work with this new drive?

Totally agree, and I have both setups. I have an m1 Mac mini and an aoostar gem12 with 8745hs. With the crazy ram prices, you ain't getting a mini PC for under $400 and that's probably with just 16 gigs. The m4 wins in every fathomable way comparatively. Cheaper, faster, more efficient, more space saving, more future proof...

I hate to say it, but apple won by basically Luigi-ing the market...they did absolutely nothing.

If you're into gaming, this works great with GeForce Now on a TV (or monitor of course). The only way to get VRR working without an Nvidia GPU. Though you'll absolutely want to use the ethernet functionality if you possibly can to get the lowest latency.
This of course in addition to be an all around great desktop. It's incredibly versatile. Storage is always a disappointment, but a simply external TB4 SSD drive works just as well.
