I think this is still Stephen Kings most popular book of all time but I just read it for the first time a few months ago and I'd have to say that I thought it was his absolute worst. I'm trying to read all of Stephen Kings books (I'm on #41 right now) and I really had to push myself to finish. I should have just quit and looked up a synopsis instead.

Not only does this newer version push something like 1,200 pages, but not really much happens in the entire book. The only part I liked was the very beginning where it explains how the world's population started dying. After the first 50 or so pages it then turns into a Jesus vs the Devil kind of plot that ultimately goes nowhere. Kind of makes me think of Lost and how great a series it was for the first few seasons when it was a bunch of people on an island trying to survive and then it turned into a crazy Jesus vs the devil plot and just ruined the show.

The book does an amazing job building the world. That takes a lot of pages to do. I rank this among the best books I have ever read

I'm in the same boat as you. A lot of people I talk to love this book, but I didn't care for it much.

The book didn't capture my attention the way I thought it would, but I still forced myself to finish it since I generally enjoyed all the King books I read prior. 100% regretted it and wish I spent my time doing something else.

I'd say if you're not fully into the story by the time Larry Underwood leaves a city, then feel free to stop reading. Just FYI for anyone thinking about picking this up.

For $2, it's a steal and I would not feel bad about checking out this book and seeing for myself

I agree that he does a great job of building the backstories (as he always does), but there was a reason his publisher made him originally stop the book at a little over 800 pages versus the nearly 1200 it is now. This current version has added literally 50% more fluff to pad out the book. I'm guessing that I would have liked it slightly better had it been shorter. At least I wouldn't have felt like I wasted as much time with the bare-bones story.
