The NAB9 is a compact Intel mini workstation that stands out for Linux, Proxmox, Plex transcoding, and other multi threaded server tasks. The i9 12900HK, dual 2.5G LAN, and four 4K display outputs make it flexible for home lab use, emulator setups, and light desktop work. It also runs quietly on Linux unless pushed hard, though the fan can have a higher pitched tone and the chassis runs warm under load. The main concern is reliability, with repeated reports of motherboard failures, a recall, and rough refurb support, so it feels best suited to buyers comfortable with some risk.

  • The mini workstation can support multi-monitor setups with HDMI and USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode outputs.

  • The iGPU can handle Plex transcoding workloads without targeting gaming performance.

  • The system can run Linux server workloads well for services like the arr suite and Plex.

  • The chassis can be used for Proxmox VE clustering and home-server style deployments.

  • This specific model has been linked to motherboard failures and a recall, which can make refurbished inventory risky.

  • Refurbished units can fail quickly, with replacement shipments arriving after delays and involving different models.

  • Some refurbished units have arrived with hardware issues like a loose motherboard screw and then memory errors.

  • Documentation and software for the model can disappear from Minisforum's support site and may not return.

I bought a NAD9 refurb during the last sale and have been happy with it running Linux. Fan is very quiet unless under high load.

BUT Minisforum at some point lost all the documentation and software from their support site and it hasn't come back. I wanted to look up some details and it was as if my model never existed.

The difference for office work must be hardly noticeable. Where do you even detect it?

Got one of these refurbs from a sale a few months back. Only negative I've noticed so far is that the fan does have a higher pitch sound (even at low speed), which can be very noticeable in a quiet room. I stuck mine inside an empty mid-tower case with its side off under my desk, which blocks the sound pretty well (only audible when fan speed ramps up).

Mine just kicked the bucket due to a known motherboard failure, but there was a recall on this specific model and that's likely why they have so many available as refurbished.

It is excatly opposite. Since Mini PCs have higher height than typical laptops, they normally have bigger and taller cooling solution which is capable of maintaining compratively lower temps than laptops during load.

I got the barebones version of this off Amazon a few months ago for $300. I already had NVME and 32gb ddr4. The box only has one NVME slot but does have a spot for a 2.5" drive. Overall it performs well. It generates a good bit of heat under load but seems to keep temps stable. The igpu does well for things like Plex transcoding. Don't game on it. The 2.5" drive uses a proprietary cable that attached to the mobo. I suggest you attach it and secure it inside the box when you get it so you don't lose it in case you need it in the future. It comes in a bag of accessories with the unit.
