I just got a "refurbished" Minisforum PC. When I got it, it was rattling. I opened it up and found a spacing screw laying on the motherboard. The PC wouldn't post. I opened it up again and found where the screw belonged, installed it, and the PC finally did boot. The PC crashed several times. Event Viewer showed multiple memory errors occurring until the PC either blue screened or simply rebooted. I tried multiple drivers and lowered the RAM speed. The RAM is good, so the problem is unfixable by me. Support would respond with up to one email a day at 4 am, even when I responded at 4:01 am I had to wait 24 hours for the next irrelevant email. Minisforum obviously doesn't refurbish their PCs, these are just returns they send back out. Its cheaper to pay for shipping and have the customer troubleshoot problems.

I mean, the point is you aren't paying for the Apple name at $400. That M4 beats the i9 hands down on anything single-threaded.

So yeah: if you are looking to run a mini server that can take advantage of multi-threading, then choose this one.

If you are looking for a mini machine for dev / desktop / creative, and are MacOS literate, the M4 is going to serve you far better.

If you are looking to do any gaming beyond casual, look elsewhere.

Capable of what? This is a desktop mini workstation, not a gaming computer.

Just saw the same! Thank you for posting. I read a very compelling piece for mini PCs last week and was going to jump on this for the same purpose.
Cheers

I'm thinking of giving up on raspberry pi for important functions like immich library or file cloud server. It's just too slow, despite what all the YouTube videos and guides claim, raspberry pi cant replace a proper processor, when running any gui interface.
I remember there were many other mini PC deals from $150 to $300 including bunch that people claimed to have Spyware in bios or something.
Is this deal and better than those? I want to run immich and while at it maybe run plex.

I was just reading through comments and was going to make one because no one else addressed this. I've ordered a barebones one of these last month. 1tb drive and 64gb of RAM and its running great.

I run Ubuntu server on it, it runs the arr suite, plex and audiobookshelf. It would absolutely run Immich, but I have another NAS that has 4x16TB drives and thats where I run Immich. This would handle minecraft servers along with the rest just fine. I didn't get this mini pc for windows so I have no experience with it but there are plenty of people here commenting about that. For Immich and plex I would 100% grab this for the price. Ya the $150 N150 machines are nice and good enough, but those are now $200+ and if you have the extra cash you wont regret this thing. You could start your journey with a usb external and then grab a NAS if you really enjoy it all. If youre just starting out, use chatgpt to help you or other youtube guides. Dont stick with windows though and just tough it out and learn some linux.

Is docker that bad on Windows? I used Ubuntu and red hat Linux back in the day and i even had Linux with otherOS on my ps3 back in the day, have some experience woth basics on Linux but I wanted it to be as easy as possible since I dont plan to run it regularly, more like set it and forget it.
Do you use any applications to replicate any of your drives? I want to do that by making rpi the back up copy of my immich hard drive.

I mean it's probably ok, but I was like why not just take the plunge. If you're not going to touch it for anything else except for docker then just skip windows. Now if you need a desktop pc and you wanna use it for a browser and stuff then sure run windows. I don't have a lot of backups set. It's still kinda confusing, and I'm really unorganized. I have a cron job that backs up my docker configs once a week so I'm getting more comfortable. I haven't fully committed to Immich so I don't have a bunch in there. I have moved my Immich multiple times so that was easy enough. I think backing up stuff with Linux is easy enough. Back rest is another container that gives you a gui for it.

Where'd you get the NAB8 for ~$250?
Sorry folks, Minisforum removed the listing. 😞 And to clarify, it was for the barebones NAB8 Plus, I have RAM and SSD on hand. I saw it had oculink, so I jumped on it, having the parts already.

It was in Windows not the bios, which still isn't cool. That's why everyone who cares does a clean Windows install for peace of mind.

6090s? Your dad must be low grade. My dad got access to 7090s. I got a dozen of them.
