Shouldn't it be 5.1.2? Such an odd configuration. Would there be just one height channel from one side?

I bet the only height speaker is dead center on the bar. There's another version with 5.1.3, where it seems like the surrounds have height speakers on them in addition to the main bar.

Looking for a good value surround setup, but it seems most deals offer mostly bad options. Nothing that is expandable or upgradeable over time either. 😵😭

I see Excellent quality open box is $300, and then cheaper for Fair open box. Worth checking what open box is showing for you.

the one height speaker is on the top of the bar in the center, but I thought that was just for dialog to be heard clearer. Glad i got my s80tr for 250 brand new from walmart earlier this year, thanks SD!

I grabbed an Open Box "Good" from the nearest store for $282 last week.

The tag just said "minor scratches" but unfortunately it was missing the remote despite not being noted.

I am happy with the sound, but the other day I found a "New, damaged box" S80TR from a reputable seller on ebay for $300, so the S70TR is going back.

That's a great price. Would you mind popping back after getting it set up and using it a bit, give your thoughts on setup and sound?

I've read reviews, but a little bit of anecdotal SlickDeal user experience would be nice

For starters, the S70TR has been a solid upgrade from the C5 speakers, but I hadn't even set up the rear speakers yet.

I'm not an audiophile by any means, and I know there are some complaints about this series of LG sound bar subwoofers having weak bass.

It's true, at least for the S70, that it doesn't thump at lower volumes, but I can definitely tell it's there. I live in a townhouse though, so it honestly has the right amount of bass for me.

I'll update and give some more in depth on the S80TR when it shows up and I get a chance to fully set it up and test it.

Ok, so delivery was really slow on the S80TR, but I did get it this week and have used it for a few nights now.

To preface, I got the LG S80TR from seller 'VIP Outlet' on Ebay for $300, with free shipping. The condition was listed as "Open Box" and the seller's description stated it was completely new and unused, but the original retail box was damaged.

It showed up exactly in that condition. The box was beat up, but inside everything was completely untouched, sealed, and in perfect condition.

I hooked it up via eARC to my LG C5 55".

S80TR Setup

Setup was super simple especially since both of the rear speakers are wireless. No issues so far with the wireless connection for the sub/rears, and no sync issues either. My only gripe is the power cables for the rears are far too short. In order for me to mount them properly I had to order some longer power cables.

It also connected to my wifi without any issues, and immediately started downloading and installing firmware updates on its own, which took about 5 minutes.

S80TR Sound

Overall the sound is fantastic! I was happy with the S70TR, but the S80TR is definitely a noticeable step up. I'm not a big audio guy but the sound from this setup feels more full and balanced. Ultimately, I am really happy with it. That being said, there is a caveat though outlined in the next section.

Atmos is lacking, but I knew this going into it. To get a proper Atmos experience you need the rear upfiring speakers, which the S80TR only has front upfiring. The surround sound experience is still really good.

With the LG C5, it does have the "WOW Orchestra" feature where it also uses the TV speakers. Honestly, as it was with the S70TR before, this feature doesn't really seem to add much, if anything, to the overall sound quality.

S80TR Initial Troubleshooting

So out of the box the S80TR did not impress me at all. It was weak, had absolutely zero bass, treble/mids were way off, and tweaking the settings didn't really seem to help at all. I had seen some advice on running the AI sound setup tool, but others saying it just made it sound worse. I was honestly considering swapping the S70TR back.

Then I found a random reddit post of someone saying to simply reset the soundbar settings using the app. There is a confusing "initialize setup" option deep in the mobile app settings for the soundbar, that seemingly recalibrates everything to baseline. I tried that and immediately noticed a huge difference! The soundbar really started to shine and the bass started thumping. I actually have to turn down the subwoofer in some instances.

So yeah, overall I am really happy with it for the price I paid. I doubt I would be if I had paid retail, but thats because there are other systems for better deals than the retail price of the S80TR. Its OOS now, but the Samsung Q930F from woot for $600 was going to be my next and final stop if I wasn't happy with the S80TR.

That was extremely helpful. Thank you for the breakdown!
