according to everything I've read, these have a pretty high failure rate and issues with the firmware... though for those who get a 'good' one, they like 'em.

Bought same model from Amazon two weeks ago. Setup was a breeze and it's been working great. For this price it's a no brainer honestly.

Deep discount and great price, but you have to ask yourself why TP-Link is knocking two-thirds off the price when no other router manufacturers are doing that.

If you're a home user who doesn't want to do a lot of work and who is a techie, get a middle to high tier Asus and put the Merlin.

If you are a home user who doesn't understand all this networking stuff, just buy an Eero system.

If you are a techie who wants to get knee deep in configuration, you shouldn't even be here. You should be reading OpnSense tutorials instead. 🙂

EEros are terrible from a privacy standpoint, nobody should be getting them

Not to mention TPlink is another Chinese telecom manufacturer that will be on the US banned list soon. One of the worst offenders for exploits/backdoors, embedded spyware and generally sketchy platforn.

Someone who's running nonsense in a network rack in the living room, this price is enticing but unless there's a deep dive into this particular revision, and some ddwrt image, or merlin, as you mentioned, I wouldn't touch it. I'm happily running a mesh set of ln1301's on ddwrt (more stable than openwrt) and a pair of T-Mobile ac68u's, remember those deals? Both 30$ for 2. Great effin APs

I would stay away from Eero. It's owned by Amazon, and they hide basic features/ functionalities behind paywalls. Not to mention the privacy nightmare associated with their practices.

Google has its quirks too, but I would trust its routers over Amazon's (Eero) for a quick, user-friendly setup.

That's why I only recommend it for the tech illiterate. It's at least plug and play. But yeah... You raise good points.

I hear you. There are so many caveats with these mega-corpos.

I have the higher end 10G model and it kinda sucks. I have MLO on my phone and PC and this thing never maintains a three band connection. I can get 8,000+ mbps on my PC through Ethernet. But wifi is more like 600mbps even in the same room on 5+6ghz. Also I have Tapo cameras and they literally also say I have an unstable network connection when I get to view them. Hopefully 2026 we will see more routers. I tried the high end Nighthawk earlier in the year but it didn't even have MLO which is just nuts.
