Same. Been looking out for an 'acceptable' price on a WD Red but the 10-16TB drives generally have a significant price premium per TB over the 18-28TB drives. I just don't need that much space.
The Red Plus is $220 for 14TB.
Not enterprise like these, but pretty good
Edit: neglected to say on Amazon. No link but easy to find with a search.

What do you mean by "waste" space? Anything other than RAID0 "wastes" space for redundancy or parity.

Two 12TB drives in RAID1 give you only 12TB of storage, not 24TB.

If you're trying to add these 14TB drives, then your best option is to make them a separate RAID volume.

If you do RAID5, then the 14TB drive would be the parity drive, so you'd end up with 24TB of space.
...and RAID 0 is a terrible idea (if either drive dies, everything's toast)
FWIW - RAID5 is kind of a PITA and can be slow/problematic on certain setups.

ugh I just bought the Ugreen NAS and was looking for a HDD... but I don't need 28 tbs lol I can't decide what to do.

edit. bought 2
Looks like you are using both HDD as combined backup of 28TB. i recommend using Raid1 setting so that 2nd HDD will be image of 1st HDD. So if one fails you still have data stored in 2nd one.

I think OP was asking if there is a way to add these new/larger drives to an existing array and take full advantage of their space. Generally, a hardware RAID system is not going to support this.

Example, existing array is RAID1 with 2x8TB for usable space of 8TB. Adding 2x14TB to this array normally nets an additional 8TB (16TB total) space because you are limited by the size of the smallest drive. In this case, 6TB is wasted.

if I already have two 12 TBs, is there a raid configuration that won't waste any space if I buy 2 of these?
I think the correct answer is going to require us to know more about the system you are putting them into. Hardware RAID controllers aren't very cooperative, but many NAS that do software RAID are flexible.

In general, I'd advise against RAID5. It's not uncommon to lose two drives and consequently the entire array. Even in cases of a single failure, the stress of rebuilding the array can cause other drive failures.

RAID6 is much safer since it tolerates two drive failures. Maybe RAID5 if you are making regular backups (which you should be doing anyway) and your data isn't critical e.g. movie library. However, in that case, maybe unraid or something else is more suitable.

What I did is find a cheap CPU with low power consumption and install OMV. Easy to use for beginners. Installed 2 HDD, 1 as the backup instead of RAID configuration. You can also configure RAID if you like.

One advantage of having a tower is you won't worry about expansion in the future.

Can you explain what enterprise means in this context?
