If you do dev work, definitely get more RAM. MacOS, Ten to fifteen tabs on any browser, plus a modern IDE will eat 16gb for breakfast. You will be swapping before you know it.

What about for those not into video editing CAD or anything like that? Just backing up iOS files from 2-4 legacy iPhones?

The M5/24GB/512GB spec is $1,499 at B&H if you go through AppleInsider (for those that need more RAM). Best way to activate the deal is through a computer; it doesn't work in the B&H app on mobile.

It will reserve the ram, but you can do all that on 8 no problem. But... Running local models is the new ram eater.

M5 16-24gb is so OP it acts like 32gb and 48gb, similar speed M1 Max 64gb for most heavy task.
This is new pro chip
Get 24gb-32gb M5 if tour power user.
You can always bolts storage with SD card and usbc. You can't bolt on fast ram besides using virtual ram
