Is "medium density" any better than normal particle board?

It can be. It depends on the application. MDF will usually be a bit stronger than particle board but I doubt these shelves will be pushing the extremes of either. Brackets like the one included tend to help alleviate any of the drooping issues because they are supported internally. They are both susceptible to sucking in moisture but as long as all the sides of this shelf are sealed (if the back of this shelf that goes against the wall isn't covered by veneer, id suggest putting a coat of paint over it to seal it), you should be ok. You might notice some deformation happen after a while of this being in a moist environment but for $10, you'll get your moneys worth and can always reuse the wall brackets.

Thanks. Grabbed a set as the ones I got from Walmart are only held with two anchors and screws and don't have a bracket. I was fed up trying to get them perfectly level. These will be stronger and much easier to get perfectly level.

Good deal but if they are like some similar shelves I bought, don't expect them to hold a lot of weight.
