It replaced a set of ELAC Uni-Fi UB5 bookshelf speakers (used) powered by a cheaper Denon amplifier (used). I know it's not a perfect comparison. A proper bookshelf setup with an amplifier takes an extra 5–10 minutes to install and costs more (but not much more if the speakers and amplifier are on sale as well). That said, this speaker has caused me to rarely listen to music in the living room anymore.
Don't get me wrong, it gets loud, but it's like listening to music in your car while driving. It's just… eh. It does look much better, though, and my wife couldn't care less about audio quality, so it stays.
I don't have exceptional hearing, but everyone should experience a good set of speakers run by a quality amp. I don't regret buying the ELACs, which my son uses now.
