I really liked the sound quality and bass, but didn't like that the batteries in the rear speakers quit holding a charge after about 6 months, and JBL declined to stand behind/ support them (Google and you'll find others reporting this).

Consider that the other two models you mentioned require power source for the rear speakers whereas the JBL does not since they have rechargeable batteries.

Not the exact same mode; I have a 4-year-old JBL 9.1.4 with 2 detachable speakers. I have them plugged in, and they work perfectly.

I've had this set for a couple years now and am mostly satisfied. The speakers are great, but the subwoofer is very susceptible to interference & constantly makes popping noises. The detachable speakers work well but only last for a few hours.

I am considering this but I got Sonos Arc gen 1 for 375 from bestbuy still to pickup and Gen 3 Sub for 480 from Costco all including tax... Wonder if this better choice

Having speakers that "last a few hours" sounds like a giant pain in the arse to me. Who would want to deal with constantly having to charge or replace batteries in speakers? Even if it was once a week, that would be a deal breaker for me. A few hours???? No.

I always had difficulty getting them to pair, and sometimes they'd just power off and then I'd have to wrestle getting them to pair again. Eventually, I just got tired of fooling with it, so kept them connected to the main speaker - until I found a replacement solution that served my purposes better (Samsung Q-Series q910b).

Also, as another commenter mentions, the sub is really susceptible to interference, and I have a lot of tech, so a lot of signals bouncing around - so the annoying popping kept reappearing, no matter where I moved it, and no matter what frequency I would adjust my mesh to, sooo.... I just gave up and moved on.

im actually not sure if this is good or bad, you'll have to be constantly charging those jbl rears (I read 10-12 hr batt life somewhere). i've read people who just end up leaving them docked to the bar out of laziness and "it sounds good either way"

Not only that but i would say its clearly superior if you can wire them with USB wall warts, and they have power pass through. because then you could run them wired or wireless, best of both worlds. But if they rely on those batteries to run at all, batteries do have a finite shelf life, and then your speakers are paperweights. even if i assume this wouldn't happen for many years.

If they have power pass through then it really doesnt matter. but I dont know.

I doubt it. I have same sonos combo and it works great. You can even add era 100s or whatever when you can and expand it.

I really like that JBL offers airplay, chromecast, and Alexa all on the same speaker

I have the 700 version of this. Quality setup and my rear batteries lasted through LotR extended editions just fine.
I have an issue with:
  1. weak center channel makes it hard to hear dialog. No volume adjustment for center channel
  2. bass is way too strong and no way to turn the subwoofer off
  3. remote control lacks functionality. I don't want to use the app. This will be a massive issue in the future when the app is no longer available.
  4. app lacks some functions of the remote? WT actual F?
  5. There are some audio functions in the remove, triggered by key sequences that are difficult to remember, worse to input. Not documented and it's not entirely clear that these functions do. Unfortunately one titled "clearvoice" doesn't seem to do anything but make voice less clear.
I wouldn't buy these.
