Interesting. I wonder how they make profits nowadays. It is a hard time for traditional book sellers.
One way, is they decided to let the local store managers have more leeway on what they stock, since they would most likely know what their customers would be interested in. Not mention one way to get away from your mobile phone/tablet is to read a book.

It's the books itself. Amazon is busy processing volumes and dropping prices to under $10.
B&N provides curated book selection at fingertips & eye tips ! That is one can pick up and check if they like the plot / format of a non fiction book etc.
That's the reason libraries are never going out of business. It's an eye candy store for readers

There are young people starting to like paper over electronic. I am a parent and know several young teens that enjoy going to B&N just because the store is an enjoyable atmosphere. They even buy special editions. I may donate my 2000+ books to one of them. Or say to them, take turns, take what you want.
Part of the attraction of physical books, vinyl, CDs and Cassettes, etc., is that in some ways forces you to focus on the task at hand. Be it reading the book or listening to the album. It's about slowing down and disengaging from the digital convenience hell that demands our constant attention.

Well, maybe order some books and you will soon realize that the online prices are lower than the in-store prices. This is how ;-) Look up some business stories and how they revamped their stores. It is a quite remarkable turnaround.
