  • About Duolingo:
    • Lessons focus on a real-life goal — for instance, ordering at a restaurant. Learners develop the vocabulary and grammar needed to achieve that goal through lots of varied practice in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
    • Duolingo allows learners to discover patterns on their own without needing to focus on language rules — the same way you learned your first language as a child. This approach, called "implicit learning," is ideal for developing a strong foundational knowledge of a language and its rules.
    • At Duolingo, we're committed to improvement. Test questions are embedded throughout our courses to measure how learners are progressing — and to show where Duolingo can improve.
    • For more info on Duolingo, click here.
  • About this deal:
    • This offer matches last year's frontpage deal which garnered over 60 thumbs up.
    • Please see the original post for additional details & give the wiki and additional forum comments a read for helpful discussion.

Super Duolingo is framed as a useful language practice tool for building vocabulary, daily habit, and basic conversation support, especially when paired with real world speaking, videos, or other study methods. It can help with pronunciation, reading, and keeping skills fresh, and some courses like Spanish seem stronger than less common languages. The main limits are thin or repetitive content in smaller languages, weak grammar explanation, and a ceiling well short of fluency. The deal itself is also clouded by pricing and eligibility quirks, including the 60 percent off math, trial restrictions, and a family plan at $120.

Duolingo is typically $80/py for Super "solo" or $120/py for Super Family. They raise the MSRP whenever they run discounts to make it look like they're running a huge sale. These are the normal prices...
It's a scummy company. Very scummy. They actually fired a bunch of their staff because "AI is the future" 🙄 in spite of having an absolutely stellar viral marketing team on Tiktok. They actually had to turn off their profile for a good while, the backlash was so bad from firing their brilliant social media team.

As a person with a 2753 day stream. Avoid this app. When I needed support. I got a %100 AI response (email said it was) that didn't help me. The App icon changes to gross icon images. The name of the app even changes moving the location in your apps. It teaches you sentences but not now to have an actual conversation. The real help to learn is behind a paywall to Duolino Max that actually explains why you got something wrong.
It also has a weird overbearing emphasis on what some might call "woke agenda" that really has no usefulness or place in a language learning app. And it absolutely hammers certain topics or sentences over and over and over again while completely ignoring many useful words or phrases. For instance the german module has a weird fascination with one of the character's ability to speak Turkish.

I've used Duolingo daily (2-20 mins a day) for 3 years now.

For about 2 of those years, I concentrated on Spanish (now I've branched out quite a bit).. and in that time I'd say I developed a limited working proficiency of the Spanish language.

Augmented by real-life interactions a few times a week, I can comfortably carry on conversations with Spanish-speaking vendors. I can watch Spanish t.v. without subtitles. I read Spanish posts on social media.

My grammar is atrocious, but meaning is consistently conveyed with little problem. Duolingo provided the elementary education from which I have been able to (very uncomfortably, at first) use Spanish in the real world.

That said, you aren't going to get there via Duolingo, alone.
I don't think it was ever meant to have you completely be proficientt without outside help. You need reinforcement by doing - speaking in the real world conversations. That is why they promote the "conversations with Lily" a lot. Alternatively, AI translations will not replace this because people learning Duolingo WANT to learn it.

The CEO admitted the popular languages like English, Spanish are going to have a snowball effect for content. English is most popular as most people in the world are trying to learn it. I would have liked to learn a lesser known Indian language (even tho 26th most spoken world language) but its unlikely they will get enough traction for it, so probably won't ever have it available.
They have had spanish and english for at least 10 years. They are still not that good. Remember that they have also abandoned learning and am going for money. They have removed things and have screwed the people that are doing the free so many times. They only care about the money and remove features to then charge for features. Remember that the original people that did this was to help people learn and were not paid. They want to make it AI also so good luck with that.

Also I have in the next couple days a 10 year streak (Italian, German, Japanese, Spanish). Duolingo is not to learn a new language at all especially free since they make it harder and harder to learn. It can help reinforce but that is it. There are better ones out there. Go and research it.

Rmeember that they fired a bunch of their staff for AI. So this should be free since AI is just everyone's stolen data. There is nothing it learns but is a large chatbot that hallucinates. Just think you are paying the CEO so that he can get a yacht for his yacht.

Didn't have good luck trying to learn Spanish, but I might consider it again for free.

How does Duolingo compare to Babbel? Anyone tried both?
Duolingo is garbage. Worst way to learn a language.

Absolutely do not recommend this for children, it's so in your face with innuendo. It's too much. This company has taken so many wrong turns and they really need an option to toggle the woke off. If you want a platform for simple conjugation, vocab building, and habit forming, it works. The gamification will keep you coming back. Yet, don't we have enough apps barking for attention on our phones already? Stick with free. And for those mentioning chess, go to lichess[.]org for a much more structured experience.

They need to give this deal for their max plan. It is ridiculous to pay for the service and not be explained why your answers are wrong

I initially used Duolingo to learn Chinese and Japanese. Pretty quickly I realized that Duolingo is absolutely garbage for learning Asian languages.

Duolingo is great to get that initial spark but for serious learning, you are better off using other apps. The fact that Duolingo is now full of ads in your face is just even more reason to avoid them.
