  • About Duolingo:
    • Lessons focus on a real-life goal — for instance, ordering at a restaurant. Learners develop the vocabulary and grammar needed to achieve that goal through lots of varied practice in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
    • Duolingo allows learners to discover patterns on their own without needing to focus on language rules — the same way you learned your first language as a child. This approach, called "implicit learning," is ideal for developing a strong foundational knowledge of a language and its rules.
    • At Duolingo, we're committed to improvement. Test questions are embedded throughout our courses to measure how learners are progressing — and to show where Duolingo can improve.
    • For more info on Duolingo, click here.
  • About this deal:
    • This offer matches last year's frontpage deal which garnered over 60 thumbs up.
    • Please see the original post for additional details & give the wiki and additional forum comments a read for helpful discussion.

Super Duolingo is framed as a useful language practice tool for building vocabulary, daily habit, and basic conversation support, especially when paired with real world speaking, videos, or other study methods. It can help with pronunciation, reading, and keeping skills fresh, and some courses like Spanish seem stronger than less common languages. The main limits are thin or repetitive content in smaller languages, weak grammar explanation, and a ceiling well short of fluency. The deal itself is also clouded by pricing and eligibility quirks, including the 60 percent off math, trial restrictions, and a family plan at $120.

does anyone actually become fluent in a new language from this
not automatically. some variables are you. how much time you invest every day, how much you actually try to/ have conversation partners.

with AI and things like the apple airpod live translate... not sure 5 yrs from now, peeps... aside from personal development...

would readily want to allocate their 'time' to learn languages... not just for a 1 week vacation, nope. at least not us americans so much Smilie

this might go the way of digicams to take pics and view pics on a PC (phones do it)

family time in lilving room all just listening to music on full tower speakers..

There's a 0% chance that you'll become fluent with Duolingo alone. You may be able to build up some vocabulary, but without putting the effort to actually speak and listen to the language on a regular basis, it's wasted effort.

I think it all depends on your situation. I agree that learning a language for a vacation will probably go the way of the dodo. However, learning a language to connect with your ethnic heritage or learning English (in non English speaking countries) for business or even learning the language of a larger minority group (e.g., Spanish in the US)... I don't see those cases disappearing any time soon.

CCP "friendly" developed "app." I have personally warned friends and family against using any evil CCP developed apps or anything. But to each their own. Cybersecurity/privacy is everyone's responsibility, like it or not.

Man they have really raised the price on this. Last year I paid $60 regular price (this year's "sale price").

Not really. Duolingo's CEO is on record for saying that they prioritize engagement metrics over learning ones. Now, I'm all for engagement when it comes to learning. But if as a company you gamify a language app to engage students, you had better make damn sure the game is perceived as being fair. In my opinion, Duolingo has done a terrible job in this area.

I almost fell for this deal, because their whining ads annoyed me. But then I realized that their "60% off" deal was more of their marketing/corporate b.s., and thought, why would I want to give a company that lies to me and has other sh*tty practices ANY money.
I'm gonna stick with their free plan only so I can screw up their statistics about Super Duolingo subscribers being 4+ times more likely to finish their courses. 🤣

AI generated slop at this point. Okay-ish for free, but wouldn't pay more than $10/year for it

I see a lot of negative comments on Duolingo, but I've used it for a bit over a year now and I like it a lot for learning Chinese. HelloTalk is another that I like a lot. The two are similar. Duolingo also teaches chess. I don't think you can learn a language solely on an app, but I do use many of them and Duolingo is one of my favorite.

I find it funny how nitpicky people get about this app. There's plenty there to help you learn some stuff like Spanish. Things like whining about ads don't matter when you have a subscription. Or whining about the extra features locked behind Max - where if you're at the point that super doesn't do enough, maybe you are ready for Max and should upgrade, or use something else. Nothing is perfect.

Are there better ways? Sure. Do what keeps you learning. I find this to be fine for micro learning sessions, and it's a deal, so I went for it.

Do whatever you can that will keep you learning.

Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese and Korean are category 4 difficulty according to state department. It's easier to learn the language by hanging out with those folks or watch Asian cinema ranging from soap opera to anime.

I doubt it you could but become fluent, but you could definitely learn enough to travel and be understood. I'm a native English speak who later became fluent in Spanish while living in South America. Duolingo certainly helps me keep my language skills fresh.
