These are fine for yard work, but showing them next to a high caliber gun is misleading. Firearms typically require dual hearing protection (earplugs plus earmuffs). A 26 dB NRR earmuff alone isn't sufficient.

Unless you're shooting at an indoor range, a NRR of 26dB is just fine for most shooting applications. Also, what exactly is "shooting-rated gear" ? NRR is NRR. There's plenty of stuff from Walker that has lesser NRR (22-23) as well.

These are fine for yard work, but showing them next to a high caliber gun is misleading. Firearms typically require dual hearing protection (earplugs plus earmuffs). A 26 dB NRR earmuff alone isn't sufficient.

oof only 26 dB. I have cheap pair that are -42 and I wear ear plugs with those.

I have a similar style from another brand and they are great for noisy household projects (saws, lawnmowers, etc). This is a great price for ear protection - bought 4. Thanks!

Yep, fair enough - I edited the wording. I was reacting to the "pictured with a big gun" marketing, not claiming some official rating. No hill to die on here, just trying to be helpful 🙂

Don't buy this cheap crap. Get a pair of proper muffs like the 3m peltor series. Amazon off brand muffs are garage, and don't block nearly what they claim.

Well.......

Let's talk normal guns.

Unsuppressed 5.56 is approximately 170 decibels.
Suppressed 5.56 is approximatively 135, give or take the quality of your suppressor.

Most other normal rifles run about the same volume level, give or take. 30/06, .270, 300 win mag, are all going to be in the 160 to 170 DB ballpark.

Little 22. long rifle average velocity runs about 140 DB, high velocity can be closer to 160 DB.

Most pistols are loud. 9mm is plenty loud, not as loud as a rifle, but still 150 to 160 DB. .45 is a little less loud. .357 is stupid loud.

.45 suppressed can be hearing safe, as can 9 mm subsonic and .22's.

Continuous noise of 100 DB is "hearing safe" for approximately 15 minutes

Any noise of 120 DB can cause instant irreversible damage.

Take the numbers above and subtract 26 DB from them to judge how much protection these muffs give you.

As with the other posters... it's plugs and muffs for me unless i'm shooting suppressed pistol, then it's nothing.

What are these magical 42db muffs? A full-head helmet that has integrated earplugs? Perhaps a full body suit? Or just a lie on the Amazon page that conned you into buying their brand?

26db is good protection. I'd double up plugs and muffs, especially if firing 556 indoors or shooting a lot.

Suppressed, subsonic 9mm is still irritatingly loud to me, over 120db. I'd wear some protection if firing a lot or indoors.

Also, I'm in for two pairs.

My Howard Leight Impact Sport are rated for 22db and have a handy passthrough.

My Peltor Shotgunner are rated for 24db.

Even if these fall short a couple of DB, they should be fine for friends and family shooting with us, especially doubled up with plugs.
