The Farpoint 70 is really a 55 liter travel pack with a 15 liter daypack, and it stands out for separating into two bags for easier travel and day use. The main bag can be compressed when not full, and the daypack is described as solid enough to use as a personal item. It has also been carried on many domestic and international flights, though the full setup sits close to carry on limits. The main caveat is size, since the 70 liter label can be misleading and the pack gets heavy fast, especially if you want something for hiking rather than travel.

  • frequent flyers who want a carry-on setup with a separate daypack because the pack can be used with the daypack separated as a "personal item," and one owner says they've used the Farpoint 70 as a carry-on on many flights with only a couple gate-check instances (YMMV).

  • travelers who like the flexibility of splitting the main bag from the daypack because commenters call separating the bags a "huge bonus," and they describe the included daypack as solid for getting around once you arrive.

  • people planning a few-week trip who want extra space but still prefer to stay practical because the 70L listing is effectively a 55L main bag plus a 15L daypack, and you can compress it or not fill it fully if you don't need the whole volume.

  • buyers who are okay with checking in and want strap protection because commenters say you can protect the straps for checking in and that Osprey makes covers that fit the bag for rain/checking.

  • travelers who want a pack that can handle being carried on your back for extended periods because one commenter says the 40L is the "sweet spot" they'd carry on their back for a long time, and they recommend packing lighter rather than jumping to 70L if you're worried about weight.

  • trail hikers or backpackers who want a true hiking/backpacking pack because commenters say the Farpoint isn't built for hiking/backpacking and recommend Osprey's hiking packs instead (with Farpoint Trek as a closer travel+backpacking option).

  • people who specifically want a single 70L bag for carry-on volume because commenters clarify it's really a 55L main bag plus a 15L daypack add-on, and they caution that 55L + 15L is close to pushing carry-on sizing limits.

  • travelers who don't want to deal with version uncertainty because commenters say it's unclear whether the listing is the newest 2025 vs 2024 iteration, and changes between versions may include major distinctions/downgrades.

  • buyers who think they'll comfortably carry a fully loaded 70L on their back for long stretches because one commenter says 70L is "too big and not that practical," and that these get heavy quickly when fully loaded.

  • shoppers who are trying to maximize value by assuming most trips need 70L because commenters say most people won't need (or want) a 70L bag for a few-week trip and recommend sticking closer to 30-40L for sanity/practicality.

I have this similar bag from 2017. Never used it. Do you think the one from 2017 material was made better than this current version?
Absolutely

I bought the Farpoint 70 in 2017 for $118 (so an older version of this pack) and I've used it as a carry-on (with the daypack separated as my "personal item") on many flights, domestic and international.
Only a couple of times have I been required to gate-check the bag. One that I can recall was a regional airline on a plane with particularly small overhead compartments. Yes, YMMV, but I have almost always gotten away with it as a carry-on.
Haha. I purchased at the same price back in 2017. It was a great price back then. I am glad and surprise that I have kept this bag for so long and not even used it yet. I guess it is time to use it now. Just need to buy a cover that fits nicely to protect the bag when I do check it in for a flight. Got any suggestions for the bag cover?

I haven't bothered with a cover to date--I imagine the Osprey rain cover will fit but it's $47-52 so I'd look for something cheaper.

I wish that the 70 L pack was wider rather than longer so I could take it on trips without checking it in
at 55L + 15L it's closes to pushing it for a carry-on size

It seems like most of the comments here are from people that use this for traveling. My use would be for actual trail hiking and backpacking. Anyone have any experience using it that way?

That's not what this is built for. Plenty of good hiking packs from Osprey if that's the main purpose. Farpoint Trek can handle both travel and backpacking albeit built more like a travel pack.
