I have this model as my primary hard drive and I added a 990 Evo Plus 2 TB as my secondary drive recently. Even though these are Gen 5X2, most motherboards will run these as Gen 4x4 and when comparing the two using CrystalDiskMark which I recently did, the regular Evo r/w speed was 4.9/4.5k, vs The Evo Plus which benchmarked at 7.1/6.6k transfer speed so the Plus is faster.
I use my PC for gaming, I really don't notice a difference, so in my opinion from what I can see these are plenty fast for that. I'll also add that unlike the Samsung 990 Pro, these drives do not have a physical DRAM cache, they instead rely on host memory buffer.

I see. So the real world differences in speed is practically minor. Your use case is an example of that huh. I just wish it has heatsink so I could pair it to the PS5 or Mac mini as an external hard drive via enclosure.
Edit: aaaaaaaand it's gone.
