This mini PC is mainly attractive as a compact Windows box with 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, and the bundled storage and memory make the price feel reasonable in a DRAM shortage. The Ryzen 7 7730U is repeatedly framed as older Zen 3 silicon, essentially a rebadged 5800U or 5825U, with Vega graphics that trail newer 780M based mini PCs by a wide margin. The hardware can still handle light use, home assistant, kids games, or a tower replacement, but it is not viewed as a strong gaming pick. There is also lingering caution around AceMagic support and past spyware concerns, with clean reinstall advice often suggested.

Why? Any suggestion?
If you are going to use a software RAID you need a specific kind of communication route to ensure data integrity. USB is just too unstable. You want as little as possible between the software RAID and the disks. I'm not saying it wouldn't work... for awhile, but if you google around you will find plenty of horror stories.

Ideally what you want is to attach your HDDs to an HBA or a backplane connected to an HBA. Even RAID cards are problematic unless you put them in "IT mode" by flashing the firmware or whatever.

You want to expose the storage devices to the software RAID via a short uncomplicated rock solid path. USB is just about the worst way to do it.

You can buy a stand alone NAS or build your own. But a USB DAS like what is all over Amazon and Newegg is a terrible idea for use with software RAID.

You could buy a used enterprise server... but those things can be hot, loud, and power hungry. Sometimes you can find systems that are relatively inexpensive but you really, really need to know what you are trying to buy. A lot of the systems are outdated and thus not really a deal.

Thanks for the info, i guess i never thought of USB limitstions when it comes to raid. How about just a software running to sync data one way only to ensure new files are appended and nothing is deleted or edited in the 2nd drive?

There used to be an old skool windows tool called synctoy that would probably handle what you are doing just fine but it's no longer supported. I googled around and came up with FreeFileSync which looks like a great open source alternative.

You would think with all the advancements in file systems and windows, and how much they incorporated into windows with power toys and what not, this would be a service built into windows. I think windows wants to sell onedrive that's probably why its not a feature.
I was thinking of just running one of those cloud services like onedrive or Dropbox but they will replicate it it on cloud.
I tried the open-source app you mentioned before, it wasn't super intuitive but I might give it another try.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

The amount this deal has shown up in the front page with "promoted" makes me worry it's not as good a deal as the upvotes would have me believe lol

Would this be top of the line if I wanted to use it as a retro gaming system?

Because nothing else with the entire setup is even close to redundant or built for high availability, the disk is not the limiting factor for availability and if USB is in that mix it is even worse.

NAS it is then... seems no better option.

So the lack of thunderbolt 4 port is what's not allowing this to have an eGPU setup w/ something more powerful?

Or just do a clean Windows/Linux install.
It's been a while since I've done this, and haven't ever done it in Windows 11. Is it the same process: Download Windows on to flash drive, boot from flash drive and reinstall? What about the license? Tia

I ordered this but I think I'm going to return it,, looking at the GPU performance it's absolutely spending $100 more or so to get a 780m chip. I've had handhelds with the 780m and they can play most games well I'm hearing vega is like half the performance and that's just nowhere near enough for even 1080p gaming nowdays.
Any suggestions for a gaming mini PC? Mostly looking to run Apex Legends and retro games.

Look for one with the AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS - the Radeon 780M has real power at a reasonable price. There are even more powerful ones but they're typically more expensive and aimed at AI.
