This is a monocular first and a camera second. Being that you are probably going to be using it outside it will give you about as good photos as a phone at 100mm but if you need to zoom in you will benefit from the extra range.
100 mm x 4 = 400mm. The optical zoom is 4x. If the optical zoom was 400x, it would math: 100mm x 400 = 40,000mm optical zoom. Lol
