Yes, this is used with the headphones. You can also pair this with their DAC for a cleaner upscaling of audio. Typically, high end headphones (and I don't mean Bose, Beats or AirPod max) benefit from this device.

You likely need a Headphone Amp & Preamp if:

Your headphones are rated above 100 Ohms.
Your headphones are Planar Magnetic.
You are at 90-100% volume on your computer/phone and it's still not loud enough.
You want a physical volume knob for your powered desktop speakers.
You hear static/interference from your computer's headphone jack.
You probably DO NOT need one if:

You use wireless Bluetooth headphones (the amp is built inside them).
You use standard earbuds or consumer headphones (like basic Bose or Sony) that get plenty loud at 50% volume.

This is an awesome, solid brand, despite the funny sounding name. I've been using a couple of other products for the past five years.

What is this for? Make your headphone sound louder?

I have a Magni/Modi Schiit stack for my HD650 headphones and they do the job really well! Honestly, for a majority of people that's enough. I assume the Magni Heretic is also quality, but I don't own that particular one.

These are great little devices. I have one for connecting a RPi Volumio setup to my stereo in conjunction with a Schiit DAC. And, I gave another to a friend who wanted a small setup for her turntable. A short Schiit stack takes up way less room and sounds great! Thanks OP!

Schiit goes on sale? I've only ever seen their open box stuff get a discount.
