Only buy Milwaukee batteries from Milwaukee approved dealers https://www.milwaukeetool.com/buy-now A lot of fakes out there that look the same and are very hard to differentiate but performance is not close to the real thing.

my experience is different, I have about 15 m12 batteries of all sizes, half of them chinese knockoffs.....I've been using them interchangeably daily for 3 years and noticed zero difference. What I have noticed is that the knockoff batteries are 75% cheaper to buy.

Milwaukee batteries from Amazon will either be fake or gray market with questionable warranty. For a couple bucks difference, getting the guaranteed real product from an authorized seller with full warranty is well worth it.

How do you like these tools generally? I have such a hodge podge of tools now, but moving towards the M12 system since I'm a weekend warrior at best. 18v seems like overkill for me and 12v are usually sufficient for short projects.

I like my M12 tools for doing overhead work, most electrical work and smaller projects. I use 18 volt for ripping plywood, drilling steel, cutting metal and driving lags and structural screws. If you aren't remodeling or building, M12 is great for household projects.

I used to ONLY buy OEM batteries from HomeDepot and Sears and direct from the manufacturers spending upwards of $140 per battery for all my power tools because I knew they were reliable. However in the past decade I've used a lot of knock-off batteries for my power tools too and most perform very similar to the "real" name brand ones. Some that you get from places like Temu are terrible but the majority that I've gotten from Amazon and even AliExpress work about the same or close enough to where it doesn't really make a difference if they have 10% less capacity than a "real" one since I can buy between 4x and sometimes up to 10x as many knock-off battery packs for the same price as a 1 OEM battery lol! The last clone I got was advertised as an 8Ah but it was the exact same size and shape of a 5Ah so I compared it to my real 5Ah battery and both made the same number of cuts through plywood sheets on the same circular saw. Many of the knock-offs are made in the same factories even using the same cells as the OEM ones which is why some knock-off batteries I've purchased and used work exactly the same as their expensive OEM counterparts. The thing I've been trying to figure out is which knock-off brands are the identical cells by buying different knock-offs then testing them and opening them to see which cells they use. There are at least 2 different knock-off brands I've found so far that seem to be identical to "real" ones so I only use those brands now since they cost 25%-30% the amount of OEM ones. Even though I've spent a couple hundred dollars on a few crappy batteries that didn't work well at all trying various clones over the years, I've gotten dozens of good ones that work like OEM ones but they only cost 10%-30% as much so I've come out ahead by a couple thousand dollars overall.
