Is this still true? I tried this over a year ago when I started hearing about the hack method for a while on slickdeals. But the store stood their ground and basically laughed at me asking me why I would possibly think that I can return part of the order when it was part of a deal to buy them together.

Oh, definitely. I've never had an issue. Did it as recently as a month ago. They can't deny a return just because you didn't return everything on the receipt.
