Since this thread will probably get a lot of views let this be my yearly reminder that when it comes to the desktop/download version, virtually no one needs anything other than Turbotax Deluxe.

TT strongly pushes Premier and Home & Business but the fact is that TT Deluxe can handle every situation that these more expensive versions can. The only exception that I am aware of is the ability to create W2 and 1099 forms for employees in H&B.

Deluxe has everything for all investment types, everything for owners of rental properties, everything for self-employed (1099-NEC/Schedule C filers), everything for those who do itemized deductions.

The higher versions offer more guidance but Deluxe has all the forms required and will still walk you through all of it.

Note that Turbotax Online is completely different, Deluxe Online is purposely limited forcing more complex returns to use the more expenisve Online versions than Deluxe.

I am stuck with TurboTax year after year. I'm kinda intrigued by the idea of importing my .tax file from last year's TT into FreeTax just to see what it can do. Mine isn't overly complex but it is also not just the easy W2 income, standard deduction, wham bam thank you ma'am either. I always just figure spending the 45 bucks (plus then I buckle and spend another 25 to eFile state because I don't want to take more time to input into my state website just to save 25 bucks is worth it to get we done with least drama but I'm open to alternatives

When you file online you are basically giving all your financial data to someone, and you can never be 100% sure what they'll do with it. That said, that also applies to TT online and even the IRS. Also, FTU does not support downloading your data in a reusable format, just PDF. FTU also does not support import of data from financial institutions, so if you have investments you will need to do those by hand. FTU might be a good option for people with simple scenarios and who don't care about other people having access to their finances. They may claim that they never sell your data, but chances are they use your data to create anonymized datasets that they do sell. There is no free lunch.

Maybe if you can "save" the virtual machine state each time you run it? TT's DRM may balk and count each run an install, if it thinks you're installing it on a different PC every time.

Have been doing CK and now cash app for few years. Before that I use to pay $12 for years to Taxact when new management took over and jacked up the prices. This year I must use TT premier as I've stocks sales.

The download Deluxe version will handle your stock sales. I've used it for several years and it handles everything including capital loss carryovers.
